The media hoopla over the 2016 Presidential race is unlike anything we have ever experienced. In a new age of constant commentary everywhere you go, whether in person or on a screen, it seems like everyone is always giving you their two cents.
One outspoken individual seizing this opportunity is relatively unknown filmmaker Craig Mazin who, aside from being on the writing teams for crowd favorites like "The Hangover" franchise and "Scary Movie," is becoming Twitter famous for an entirely different reason. As GOP front-runner Ted Cruz’s freshman roommate at Princeton, Mazin is the go-to source for all things that Cruz’s advisors hoped to sweep under the rug. His rants began in 2011 when Cruz was running for Senate, but with his recent success, Mazin cannot refrain from releasing his disdain. Under the Twitter handle @clmazin (I highly suggest the follow, it does not disappoint), Mazin has spent months delivering anecdote after anecdote about anything from his former roommate’s body odor to his abhorrent attempts at picking up women. His hatred for his former roommate is best summed up in a statement he gave to Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show" last month:
Not that I disagree with Mazin’s tactics of shaming, nor do I disagree with his views of Ted Cruz’s politics, but this must be an incredibly frightening notion for not just Cruz, but everyone who has ever had a freshman roommate. Who would have thought that every night of unconscious stumbling and unwarranted shenanigans could turn into a media frenzy plaguing your ascension to success? Remember that time that you belligerently bombarded your dorm room with… On second thought, we don’t have to go much deeper with that story; one person holding this over my head is enough.
But the point is this: the power that all of us hold over one another, especially in today’s interconnected network of gossip and hearsay, is not only immensely powerful, but astoundingly dangerous. So what is the moral of the story? Keep your friends close, and your freshman year roommates much, much closer. I’m sure Ted Cruz wishes he had.
