You see, I have this best friend.
Our senior year of high school my best friend and I (we'll call her Kennedy, since that's her name) decided to be college roommates. Kennedy and I met at the beginning of our four years in secondary education and became almost inseparable once junior year of high school began.
So, when we both decided to attend the University of Kentucky, our first choices as dorm roommates were obviously each other.
Never ones to fight in high school, we ignored the warnings that other people gave us about the horrors of rooming with your best friend. With similar headstrong personalities and an interest in all the same things, we were (and still are) a great best friend match--even joining the same sorority at the end of Panhellenic Recruitment.
Moving in went smoothly. The main reason why minimal problems occurred, was because I'm not much of a decorator. In fact, we only took pictures in Kennedy's room because mine looked like it hadn't even been moved into yet after I had finished. We found that other girls that lived on our floor fought over decorations and where to put certain items... we just didn't.
Over time, I assumed we would fight about small things like being in each other's space or one of us not being clean enough. It was this semester, however, when I realized that Kennedy and I got along so great because we simply didn't mind each other's company and we both are the messiest people on the planet. Entering our room is a task in itself as you have to literally kick at the laundry strewn across our floor, but we just don't care.
We both have similar class schedules and both have jobs so we don't see each other every second of every day, which is definitely another key factor to us being so civil. But if anything, being roommates has made us closer than ever. We have sleepovers in her bed almost every night (hers is comfier than mine) and we eat together almost every day.
If you had told me a year ago that rooming with my best friend was going to be one of the greatest decisions ever, I might not have believed you.
Before moving in, I truly was worried that we would have some serious problems living in the same dorm. However, it is easily one of the best parts about my freshman year experience in college. Kennedy and I plan to live together for the next four years of college (we just signed a lease!!) and I couldn't be happier about it. But stay tuned throughout the next four years to see if we end up killing each other...
