5 Things That Happen When Your Roommates Are Also Your Best Friends

It's easy to tell when you and your roommate(s) don't get along. There are more awkward silences, more small talk, more time locked away in your room to avoid going into the kitchen at the same time as them. Maybe that last argument about the dishes left things tense in the house, or maybe it's gotten so bad that you've scheduled yet another roommate meeting with them. When you come home to bad vibes everyday, life kind of sucks. But, when your roommates are actually the people you would choose to hang out with every night even if they didn't live with you, life can become pretty amazing. Here's what life looks like when you live with your best friends.

5. You celebrate holidays together.

You can't always be home for the holidays, but that doesn't mean they have to be any less fun. With roommate besties, the holidays mean struggling to cook a Thanksgiving turkey together, gathering around the cheapest Christmas tree you could find for a gift exchange and mostly just laughing at yourselves.

4. You're always up late.

Sleep? What sleep? It's so hard to go to bed when every night can turn into a slumber party. When you have someone who has chocolate chip cookies, wine and "The Office" ready for you when you get home, who needs a good night's rest?

3. You hold mini fashion shows before going out.

Getting ready to go out with your other friends always feels one-sided. Someone rips through their closet and spends an hour in the bathroom while the other just sits on the bed and waits. But with your roomies, all your closets are right there. You know you'll all end up looking amazing...but you also know you're in serious danger of the club closing before you're all ready.

2. You know someone will actually notice if you go missing.

In the group chat, the first one home always asks where everyone else is. You know each other's work and class schedules too so if something ever happens to you, you'll know your roommates have probably already called the police...and called dibs on your belongings.

1. You love the excitement you all share when everyone is actually home.

It's like a family reunion when you're all under the same roof at the same time. Your busy lives get placed on the back-burner when everyone is there. As you catch each other up, you realize how amazing it is to have people who care about where and how you spend your days. When you're all together, your to-do list needs to wait.

Living with awesome people who you're not even related to makes you feel like the luckiest person in the world. You know that coming home to love, support, and friendship every day can really impact one's outlook on life, and you should never take that for granted. So don't forget to spread the love in your household because roommates who are best friends are also family.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
