The Death Of Romance In Modern Society

For millennials of the hook-up culture, Valentines Day is pretty pointless.

When I was a little kid I used to love Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day meant coming into class with little paper cards for all of your classmates. It meant a day of endless candy and compliments from friends. It meant red and pink decorations, it meant hugs and stuffed animals from my parents. It was a day of affection: I had no qualms about it.

It was only as I matured that the reality started to sink in: Valentine's Day Sucks.

Why has this holiday even become a thing? Really. Yes, it’s a day to celebrate love, to get all romantic with your significant other, but truly if you were with someone everyday should be treated like Valentine's Day. On top of that, Valentine's Day is just a constant reminder for anyone who is single that they are alone.

Aside from that, Valentine's Day is just dumb. I have had friends that were trying to break up with their significant other but waited until after Valentine's Day just so the break up wouldn’t be that bad. I have heard of people spending hundreds of dollars on roses and dinner reservations and gifts. Why?

My generation is the pioneer of hook-up culture. Maybe it is because everyone’s parents are getting divorced, or maybe it is because people just want to be independent, but somewhere down the line, people thought it would be cool to stop caring. A lot of us have yet to have a significant other. Thank you Valentine's Day for being a constant reminder of that.

It's almost sad that romance is dead. This generation has become consumed with hook-up culture. We go out, we find someone, we hook up with them and then feel awkward every single time we see them walking around. It’s like we’re all afraid of commitment, it's not considered cool to show any feelings. You do not hear crazy love stories anymore. People don't even date anymore. Even saying that you are “exclusive” is equivalent to giving someone an engagement ring nowadays.

So, why remind us? Why does this holiday still exist? Why constantly remind us that we are single, that we may not find someone, that our parents are divorced...it is just a pathetic waste of a day that could bring everyone a lot less stress.

Moral of the story: Please do not yell at me to buy roses in Upper Usdan, I literally don’t have anyone to give them to.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
