Our Media is supposed to Emulate real life. Right? It's supposed to make our Small existence as an individual seem connected through shared experience.
So, Why do movies and T.V. tell us we aren't supposed to talk about emotions with our Partners? Why does nearly every Romantic Comedy include some trope about keeping something from the main characters Partner/potential Partner?
Now I no longer watch Rom Coms or anything really romance heavy. It's too unrealistic.
I see my partner an average of three hours a day (Not including sleep). He works a lot and it's generally split between mid morning and late evening. Three hours a day isn't a lot. Yet, we still find the time to talk about our feelings. We talk about our day, our friends, and everything. It doesn't really take a lot of time or effort. Our relationship is based on a Solid Friendship. One that we value over our romantic relationship.
That is how it should be. The standards you hold your best friends too, should be the same you hold your partner too. They are your confidant, cheerleader, sounding board, and devils advocate. If you can't share your emotions with your partner, you should reevaluate their position as such.
I'm not here to spout how your partner has to be your everything. Your End All, Be All.
What I'm saying is that trust and communication have to be the foundation of your relationship.
It has to be solid and Unwavering.
It's tough.
To put so much faith in another human like that. To trust yourself to have made a good decision in Partners.
Love is Messy business. It hurts. It's complicated.
And, Honestly, No one knows what the fuck they are doing.
We all pretend we've read some rule book explaining how to love someone.
"Don't text back right away,"
"You've gotta pay for the food,"
"You can't ask for that. It's just gotta 'happen'"
But none of these things are true or real. There is no book that tells us how to live or love.
If you want something, ask.
If you have feelings, share them.
Be an Adult. And Use your fucking words.
