If you're familiar with television, each network has its own "brand." There are three main networks, ABC, CBS and NBC, all who have their own distinct programming. The CW and FOX however have struggled to find a brand that makes them stand out and gain viewers. While the CW has teamed up with DC to make a plethora of teen superhero shows, FOX has gone in a different direction.
FOX, since the success of Glee, has been attempting to gain viewers by having music and musical programming to catch those audience eyes. They, however, are trying to make the shows new and inventive, and making them LIVE.
They had immediate success with Grease LIVE!, the spin on the 80's classic. It's even available to stream of Netflix now because of its popularity. They followed up with "The Passion" a take on Jesus Christ's last days on Earth, which aired on Palm Sunday. This, obviously, did not gain the same popularity as Grease, but still, an attempt by FOX to keep their LIVE performances going.
In their newest attempt to keep the shows going, FOX is recreating the cult classic, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Still in the works, the production will air sometime later in 2016, but as the cast comes together the spin seems to be showing its own hand.
The casting is both trying to get young viewers as well as showing their appreciation for diversity.
Victoria Justice was named as the soon to be Janet. Her past as a Nickelodeon star isn't promising, but at least she does have a singing background.
The best casting so far, has been of Laverne Cox. She will be playing the arguably best character, Dr, Frank-N-Furter. Her own trans background makes her perfect for the deep singing that the role requires, but her obvious femininity will make costuming fun and new for the character.
However, the most exciting part of the two-hour special, will be the use of Tim Curry. Instead of reprising his role as Frank-N-Furter, he will be the narrator. His iconic voice will make the show exceptionally exciting to watch.
At the very least, this new version of Rocky Horror will give FOX another chance to make a brand off of musical specials.
