There have been counterarguments stating that rock is already dead because of various reasons, including: there is too much music out today that someone's attention span could not possibly stay with one particular band, hard to appeal to a mass majority and that rock isn't considered "pure" anymore. Countless upon countless reasons as to why people truly believe this. Well, I don't believe rock is dead. Far from it, actually. It's healthier than it ever has been.
Yes, rock is perceived differently nowadays than what it was 30 years ago. There were bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, KISS, etc. They all had a specific sound, but they were considered rock in general and today, they are considered classic rock. People make the argument that what is considered classic rock are the bands/groups/singers that helped to make rock "pure," that the music that is coming out now will never be like what it was.
Well, that's the point. Music is growing and will continue to grow as time goes on.
There are an incredible amount of sub-genres that have come out of rock. There is grunge, alternative, punk, metal, hardcore, deathcore, metalcore, emo and the list goes on. There is a little something for anyone willing to listen.
Especially in today's digital age where a band can be located on the internet within seconds and their music is able to be checked out instantly, everything is more accessible than it has ever been. People are able to get their music out there to have others listen to. This is the time to create music where just about anyone is able to listen. Children growing up and discovering their sound of choice are easily able to figure it out on their own instead of only being exposed to what their parents have to show them. I currently have an iPod filled with various different rock bands at the touch of my finger. It's great!
If that wasn't enough, new bands and groups are coming out of the shadows every day and are wanting to get their name out there. They want their stories told through music. They want the chance to be heard just like plenty of bands before them have had the chance to do as well. New music is coming out every day. Rock will never die because it will survive through the next generation bands to come. They all look up to their idols who inspired them to create rock songs in the first place.
A genre will never die unless every person has given up hope on it. Rock may be different now than it was before, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The genre continues to grow. I know rock will not die because I will personally believe in it for as long as I live.
As Rob Halford of Judas Priest would say, "Rock isn't dead. It's alive, it's thriving and it's exciting."
