The Queen Is Dead

By queen, I mean queen bee, that is.

If you know me, then you know how much I love bees. I wear a bee every day in the form of a James Avery ring that my grandmother got me for my high school graduation, I even had bees be the center of focus for all of my speeches freshman year in my public speaking class. To get to the point,

I know a lot about bees and they are very important to me. With summer coming to an end, I am starting to think of all the bees that are going to die in the winter and snow for various reasons.

I had a plan when I moved into my apartment to start a small garden on the deck with bee friendly plants but life caught up with me and that didn't happen. I would like to get it started in the winter so that the plants can grow and bloom so I don't have to wait.

Anyways, the things that I wanted to address right now is the increase in the death of bees and the increasing idea that it is okay for science to develop robotic bees. It is not an uncommon fact that there has been a huge decline in the bee population over the years and even greater with the increase of deforestation and urban developments.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that bees provide over 70% of our diet; fruits, vegetables, literally anything is made by bees. What really gets me is the amount of talk that people have but the lack of action. There are so many companies that make shirts about saving the bees, so many companies that say they are involved with saving the environment or bees but really don't do anything of use.

You can throw a cute bee shirt on whatever beachy chick you want but at the end of the day that is doing absolutely nothing to help the cause that is thrown on the shirt. I feel like I have done a small small part because I did spend a semester educating my whole class about the decline of bees and also how important they are and I am also planning on planting bee friendly plants. My best friends mom is even going further than me and she is going to start bee keeping in her backyard by making a bee friendly home.

Something else that really peeves me off about this is the amount of articles that I keep seeing about how "Scientists are Making Robotic Bees to Help Pollination" and I think that it is so stupid. Yea, this could solve a very very important issue but why would we want to spend money on robots when we could spread it on the real deal.

The money that is being wasted on the research and production of the robotic bees could be better spent on the reviving of the bee population. Having the real bees being saved is so much more important than some robotic bees flying around. We have seen what it is like to have species go extinct and seen what it is like to see animals and species be on the brink of extinction and we really do nothing.

Our planet is on the bring of extinction by the fact that we treat it so poorly and we only see so many people doing things because that is something that we can see and is directly effecting us. Bees and their effect on us are not always directly seen so people tend to ignore it and don't really care to help out.

It just frustrates me to see people turning to technology instead of actually trying to save the bees which is crazy important to us. It just seems so much more feasible and wise to work with something that we already have than to create something entirely new. Words cannot describe how mad this makes me that I really can't even put it into words so I am just going to end it here.

Basically, I think that if you are as passionate about saving the bees as your shirt makes me think you are, then maybe you should actually start doing something, planting bee friendly plants, start bee keeping, educating the public, and so on. Maybe if we all decided to do that and get into bees for the right reason instead of using them as a new fashion accessory or a new science project then we would actually wind up saving them and not having our food sources die out because we are a lazy and selfish people, hence the title, The Queen is Dead.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
