You know those movies that you can always go back to? The ones that you've been watching forever that just feel like home to you? Those are the best. It's great for me because I have tons of rewatchable favorite movies. Maybe it's a franchise piece like any given "Harry Potter" or "Lord of the Rings" movie. Perhaps it's a movie like "Remember the Titans," "In Bruges" or "Inglorious Basterds" that just seems to enthrall you over and over again with great plots and strong acting. I thought hard about all of the movies that work for me in that way. The movies that have that "spark of comfort" and can keep me bewitched for the entirety of their runtime. While I thought about these movies, I browsed Netflix and was delighted when I came across one of my all time favorites: Disney's 1973 animated feature, "Robin Hood."
Clocking in at only an hour and 23 minutes, this animated beauty retells the famous story of Robin Hood, a hero of the working class who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. However, this isn't Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood," all of these characters are animals. Robin Hood, a strapping and compassionate fox, takes back the taxes that Prince John unfairly takes from his subjects, while trying to win the heart of his childhood sweetheart, Maid Marian.
I love this movie. I know, that's probably obvious, but I can't get over it. This movie nails just about everything that Disney was great at with their animating department. The facial expressions in the movie are positively endearing, the backgrounds are beautiful hand painted pieces with animation gently situated on top of them, and the animals have unique qualities that give them that individuality that Disney is famous for. It's a movie to appreciate solely because of the attention to detail given by the artists.
Robin Hood himself is an absolutely wonderful character. The idea of Robin Hood is already likable -a rogue that takes from the greedy prince? what's not to like?- but Brian Bedford's smooth voice brought a suave characteristic to the famous hero that can't be matched. He's quick on his feet and even quicker with his words. His comrade, Little John (Disney fans will be excited when they realize he's also the voice of Baloo in "The Jungle Book") is a lovable and loyal friend. He sticks with Robin throughout all of their adventures and wants Robin to find love above anything else. His dedication to the happiness of his friend makes him a great supporting character.
And then there's Prince John. Sometimes I think Prince John is the greatest Disney villain ever created. Not because he's sinister or more evil than anyone else, but because he's unapologetically hilarious. He's a crybaby of the highest caliber, even going so far as to suck his thumb. Disney just cranked everything up to 10 with this guy being a stereotypical politician. His closest comrade is a snake, and the Prince's opening line is "Taxes! Taxes! Beautiful, lovely taxes!" He honestly just feels like a political cartoon that's been animated to move. His sing song and quirky laugh, putting the emphasis on the "AH" of "Aha" is a subtle brilliant catchphrase, flawlessly voiced by Peter Ustinov, a two time Academy Award Winning Actor.
What else? The opening theme to this movie went on to be sped up and known as the hamster dance (that's probably why it sounds so familiar). I got my current twitter bio from this movie when the narrator said "My job is to tell it like it is, or was, or whatever". The fighting scenes have fun swordplay, and there's a sneaky castle break in scene that somehow always manages to put my nerves to the test, no matter how many times I watch it. This movie has just about everything. It should also be noted that there's this cult consensus that Robin Hood is a total babe. I know a lot of people that would admit to it. Sure he's a fox...but that smile...I mean come ON. (Seriously, one of the first message boards I saw on IMDb was "Robin Hood Was My First Crush!"...something's going on here). I mentioned the time of this movie being an hour and 23 minutes. That's not long at all. So finish reading this, maybe read some of my other articles, and then just indulge yourself in some Disney magic. Until next time all!
"Robin Hood" is available to stream on Netflix now!
