I've never been a planner. I've never been very competitive. I always just wanted to go with the flow and truly enjoy what I was doing or learning. But as I realized I had no Summer plans, or at least that the summer plans I was initially excited about were not plans that were considered "successful," all of my insecurities came flooding in.
Thoughts of, why can't I be more competitive? Why can't I actually want to try hard? Why can't I be like everyone else? Why can't I strive for success? But then I thought of another question--what is success? These past weeks, I became afraid that I wasn't doing enough to get places in life. But at the same time, where is the finish line of this "success?"
A lot of times, our society tells us success is financial stability. Success is money. Success could be a nice family, a place to live, being CEO, being a respected person. But tell me, once you achieve this, will you be able to stop and say "I am successful. I am done"? Or will you want more? Will you be satisfied? Does success equal happiness? Or will there be another thing you add on to this definition of success?
I'm not saying we shouldn't try hard. I'm not saying we shouldn't have goals. (In fact, don’t be lazy like I am) We should work hard and take advantage of all of the opportunities we are given. We should continue to chase after our dreams and passion. But really, where is the finish line? Where is the end? What is it that we are all working for, sacrificing for? What is the road to success and happiness and when do we get there?Thank you for listening to me question life.
