You’re sitting with your friends at lunch and all of a sudden you hear the name mentioned: “Grey’s Anatomy”. Chances are that you have heard about this show at least a handful of times in your life and, coincidentally, it probably did not come from the mouths of doctors, but from the mouths of 17-year-old teenage girls. Maybe at this point, you are considering taking on the task of watching this series from beginning to end. While it seems a bit overwhelming, I am here to help you through the medical jargon and the complicated relationships between Dr. Grey and what seems like every surgeon on the planet.
“Grey’s Anatomy” is not the kind of show to which you can kick your feet up and leisurely watch. In order to successfully and fully complete your Seattle Grace experience, you must have the right tools. These include loads of free time to indulge in Netflix, a good snack, little to no medical background, and a passion for some juicy drama!
There is nothing like one of those rainy days where you can take a break from your active life, curl up on the couch and watch a good movie. Although, in order to really binge-watch “Grey’s Anatomy” the correct way, every day needs to be the ideal day. Someone who is an avid Grey’s watcher has limited time to do anything other than stare at their Netflix screen. It is crucial for you to have hours on end to simply watch seasons at a time; this is the best way to do it.
Next comes a topic that almost anyone, Grey’s watcher or not, can relate to: a delicious snack to munch and drink to slurp. The ideal snack for a show like this is popcorn - something you can just throw in your mouth while it is gaping wide open at the screen. Messy foods such as spaghetti or pizza are not recommended, as you will be jumping out of your seat frequently. As far as a drink goes, the best thing to sip on during a craniotomy is good old-fashioned water. You have to stay hydrated and replenish your fluids from all of those tears you shed last episode!
Most people say they can’t keep up with the show because of the constant use of medical language. I am here to tell you that you are SUPPOSED to feel clueless in this department. One of the best parts about embarking on this surgical pilgrimage is that you will come out from it knowing every surgical term possible. As the seasons progress, you will find yourself asking “Why is he using a ten blade? Clearly he needs a six blade for this bowel resection." This feeling only comes from watching all twelve seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy. After watching your first season, you will practically be able to do your own ambulatory phlebectomy. You will have the knowledge to spot the signs of a heart attack, and basically be able to conquer the world with your dearest friends: Meredith, Alex, Izzy, and Christina.
One thing you will not be able to keep up with, however, is the constant drama and juicy romances popping up throughout each episode. When you start Season 1 of this show, you will feel like you are on top of your game. Meredith likes Derek, and the world is happy. As the years progress, the relationships between people change and even cease to exist, sometimes. This is why it is key that you pay attention the whole episode; this is not the time to fold that laundry which has been sitting in the dryer for three days! Game-face on, interns - you have a lot to learn!
So now that you have learned the basics on how to watch this show correctly, go ahead and get started! With each season containing around twenty four episodes, you are going to have to hunker down and do some serious binge watching! Though I must confess, it is an overwhelming hobby to take up, you will not regret your decision. Besides, aren’t we all over Gossip Girl by now?
