The Ridiculousness that is College Textbooks

Not only do I pay tuition and sorority dues, but I pay an arm and a leg for textbooks as well.  In true sorority girl fashion I exclaimed, "I literally can't even!" when purchasing my textbooks this fall.

No matter which college you attend, you know the struggle of buying textbooks. Whether required or suggested your professor somehow manages to make you feel as if you have to have it. You search frantically through Facebook pages and text messages in hopes of buying one from a friend, but with no luck you find yourself making the long and thought-provoking journey to the bookstore. Not to mention, you have to decide on a bookstore.

Once you have arrived, you weave in and out students flooding the area. You creep through each aisle hoping to find your book still in stock. You sing praises when you stumble across the last copy of your Biology book; however you look at the price and you are taken aback by the amount of numbers following the dollar sign. You're in a sticky situation.

To buy, or not to buy? That is the question. Should you search more on the internet, or should you just take it for what it is and spend the 300 dollars? I can't tell you which I would choose because my mind changes with every book, but what I can tell you is it is absolutely ridiculous to make a college student pay that much to be able to pass their class. Maybe I am biased, but I truly believe that it is insane to provide books in high school while our parents contribute 100% to our income and then charge hundreds of dollars for them when you make it to college.

Why can't books be a part of tuition (without tuition going up)? Or maybe we could charge like 50 dollars instead of 150? I honestly do not understand. I think the worst, by far, is when your teacher actually WROTE the book that you're spending 100 dollars on. Not only are you getting paid to read your own words to me, but you're also forcing me to personally pay you?  Call me crazy, textbook authors (especially teachers), but I think you'll be okay without charging 14 billion dollars.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
