This Halloween I decided to do something different than my normal plan for the night, which is usually sitting around eating Halloween candy. I went to my university's production of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," and I was thoroughly impressed.
I had been familiar with the story line of "Rocky Horror" but I had never seen it live. In addition to the show, our school's activity club had a costume contest as well. So I went in my outfit from "A League of Their Own," and stood in a line much longer than I anticipated.
There were so many people there, and more chairs had to be put out to accommodate the unexpected audience. I had no idea that this show was as popular as it is.
For those of you who are not familiar with "Rocky Horror," the general plot is about a recently engaged couple Janet and Brad, who end up at a mysterious mansion when they get stranded in the rain on a road trip. They meet Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist and his crew of odd characters like Riff Raff, the mysterious butler.
The couple are dragged into a night of promiscuous activity, song, dance and even the creation of a monster, named Rocky. In the live version, the actors act out the movie version that is projected behind them. I thought my school did a great job of casting the characters, each one seemed like they really delved into their character, no matter how eclectic that character may be.
Their costumes were so closely matched with the movie version, it was as if the characters had popped out of the screen and were dancing before my eyes. I was also impressed with the lighting and props, it made the show look amazing and from bold blues and reds, the moods of the movie came through in this live action version.
What I was not expecting was how much the audience participates with the actors. Throughout the show, the audience could use a code to access the script that included parts for the audience to yell. Most of the things they yelled were rather derogative and inappropriate, but it added an element of humor to the show that I was not expecting as well.
I now understand how much people love "Rocky Horror," because they truly get into the show and the responses. The people behind me had it completely memorized, and recited it word for word.
I definitely will be attending another production of this show, because it was a great Halloween activity as well. It had a spooky theme to it, and was just overall entertaining. If you are into a bit of horror and comedy, this is definitely the show for you.
