I've loved Ed Sheeran since his album "+" came out back in 2011 when he was just beginning. Back when "The A-Team" blasted on every radio in the nation. His sound has hardly changed. And each time I listen to his songs, a part of me is a little happier. I'd like to share with you all my thoughts on my favorites on the "Divide" album, and why you should listen to this lyrical music genius.
1. "Hearts Don't Break Around Here"
This song is simply beautiful- no better way to describe it. It's about an unconditional love that speaks through the lyrics. To be honest, it's cheesy but that's why it's adorable. Any hopeless romantic or anyone who loves the idea of love must listen to this song. It's truly a song I could listen to just for the lyrics, but also for Ed's voice.
Favorite lyric: "She is the flint that sparks the lighter, and the fuel that will hold the flame."
2. "What Do I Know?"
This song praises music and the importance of it. Ed shares his passion for music in this uplifting song. It describes the idea that people get caught up with materialistic things that they forget that there is love, music, and so much more to live for. The lyrics, "what do I know" adds a bit of a silliness to it. He's not demanding that people stop being materialistic, he's simply stating his opinion in a gentle, uplifting way.
Favorite lyric: "We can change this whole world with a piano, add a bass, some guitar, grab a beat and away we go."
3. "Supermarket Flowers"
Listen to this song if you've ever experienced loss. The lyric, "A heart that's been broke is a heart that's been loved" perfectly describes loss. This song expresses the variety of emotions that comes with loss. The fine line between sadness and acceptance. That it's okay to be upset, to shed more than a few tears, but that it's nice to look back on the memories you've shared with the one you lost while they were still here. Ed never fails to write about the experiences people don't seem to talk enough about.
Favorite lyric: "A heart that's been broke is a heart that's been loved."
4. "Dive"
"Be cautious" is the #1 lesson explored in this song. Ed discovers how he dives right into relationships and then discovers that the person truly doesn't mean it when they call you "baby" or say "love you." "Tell me the truth before I dive right into you" is an important lyric. People seem to be caught up in love that they might be led on and fall too fast. The lyrics in this song are powerful and suggest that you shouldn't fall too fast, because you just might not be able to catch a breath.
Favorite lyric: "I could live, I could die, hanging on the words you say."
5. "Save Myself"
Sometimes we give all our "oxygen to people that could breathe." This song suggests that sometimes we're giving too much and not getting back. That it's not okay to be used, that no one should make you lose sight of your own well-being. It's cheesy, but Ed tackles this issue with this beautifully-written song. Human beings need to be selfish sometimes.
Favorite lyric: "I've got to save myself, but if I don't then I'll go back to where I'm rescuing a stranger just because they needed saving."
6. "Castle on the Hill"
This song is nostalgic and beautiful. It describes the scene of a "castle on a hill," a childhood where there were almost no problems. It's a coming-of-age story in just a few short minutes. That no matter how far away you are from home, that hill will always be there when you get back. You will always have those memories ingrained in your mind. Ed captures the idea of growing up in the best, most honest way possible in this song.
Favorite lyric: "I still remember these old country lanes when we did not know the answers."
This may sound cheesy, but I love the way music makes me feel. Music truly makes the soul feel alive, and Ed Sheeran's new album did just that for me.
