I know, I know, I need to see La La Land.
The film tied Titanic and All About Eve's record for most nominations with 14 nods in categories like Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Saturday Night Live did a hilarious skit titled "La La Land Integration", in which host (and one of my favorite human beings) Aziz Ansari is questioned for thinking the movie was just okay.
Trust me, I want to, I just haven't gotten around to doing so. I thought I would take my little knowledge of the film that I have required from watching the trailers, seeing award shows, and going on social media to write by own review of the film. Hopefully this will result in some hilarity. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, if by some crazy miracle you actually end up reading this, I apologize for my ignorance, please forgive me.
La La Land is easily one of my buzzed about films of the year. In this whimsical romance, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star as unrealistically attractive lovers in Hollywood. They're both struggling to make it big in the entertainment industry. They could possibly be actors, maybe singers, or perhaps puppeteers. I'm not exactly sure. Ryan Gosling spends his time snapping his suspenders and crooning love songs for Emma Stone (who can blame him?). Emma Stone, meanwhile, dances her way through L.A. in really cute swingy floral dresses that I want for my own wardrobe. She also delivers award winning vocals and her performances in the film are arguably in competition with her rendition of "I've Got a Pocketful of Sunshine" from Easy A.
The big kicker of the film is when the two lovers somehow end up dancing in the night sky. Is it a dream? Are they on a film set, suspended on strings? (Yes, I know this question would be answered to me if I were to go see it, but let me marvel in mystery for a little while longer). It's a beautiful musical about love and show business. There's also the song "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" which frameworks the film. I am almost certain that nearly every indie singer songwriter has covered this song now.
So there you have it. A review of La La Land from someone who has yet to see La La Land. Entertainment Weekly, I'd be happy to take a job as a film critic.
