Wednesday, September 14th: The day AHS fans have all been waiting for. We have been strung along for months with little teasers of this new season, questioning what it would be about. We were finally graced with the presence of this creepy and messed up, yet very entertaining show and let me tell you…I didn’t get it.
Let me start by saying how disappointed I was when they didn’t show the opening credits. This show is famous for their creepy opening credits because it adds a little extra personality to the show’s theme. That didn’t happen on this first episode, which contributed to the confusion of the show’s motives.
Also, what was the actual theme? It continuously said “My Roanoke Nightmare” throughout the show, but that didn’t necessarily give away the over all theme of this season. This episode acted as if it were a show explaining a couple’s supernatural experience in their new home. It consisted of cuts between different actors; The actual couple that is telling their story, and the couple in the show reenacting the situation. This first episode was interesting and suspenseful, but I was not getting the “American Horror Story” vibe that I had anticipated.
Another thing I found disappointing was the lack of Evan Peters. I know, he’ll show up at some point in the show. But let’s be real, a majority of us tuned in with high hopes of seeing him. And my hopes were crushed when I saw he wasn’t in the first episode.
Overall, this episode did not exceed my expectations. The season’s storyline was not very clear and the theme seemed almost nonexistent. Thinking back on the first episode, my first guess would be that this season could be a string of stories that were inspired by true events. But then again, this is something I won’t know unless I continue watching it.
Many of my questions have not been answered in the very first episode, which makes it a little discouraging to continue watching the rest of the season. But the only way to get those answers is to dig deeper into the show and watch it again next week with the hope that something will click.
