A Response To "Healthy..NOT Skinny"

Isn't It Possible For Me To Be Both?

A Response To "Healthy..NOT Skinny"

Last time I checked, you could be both.

I grew up a relatively small girl. McDonald's was my happy place and I wasn't ashamed or afraid to admit that. I'd get the same thing every time I went, (Large big mac meal with a bottle of water and 4 piece chicken nugget with honey mustard sauce). This food wasn't good for me, yes I'm aware. However, the fabricated voices saying-"She starves herself to be skinny"-just wasn't true.

It's almost like some people who weren't fortunate enough to have a fast metabolism became spiteful. Why not say skinny girls starve themselves to make them feel better? Overweight women feel better about themselves and skinny girls feel like shit.

There was a small time where I became fixated on starving myself because I felt like I should be. If I actually ate in front of people (the ones who liked to talk) the next words to leave their mouths were- "I bet she throws it up after this."

I actually started becoming extremely self-conscious. It was a constant battle for me to love myself to begin with, but when I became the target of everyone's whispers, it got even worse.

"Is she okay? She looks thin.."

As if being thin means you aren't okay.

I can't imagine looking at someone's daughter..turning to the mother and saying: "Is she okay? ..because she looks extremely overweight."

It's amazing that we are living in 2017 and people still find a way to body shame. We've somehow nailed into everyone else's brains that: BODY SHAMING OVERWEIGHT WOMEN IS HORRIBLE.

No one bats an eye when it's done to skinny girls.

-Who wants to hold onto bones at night?

-Guys don't like twig girls with no body.

-That's so nasty when you can see a girl's hip bones.

-They look like a 12 year old boy.

It's ruthless and hurtful.

Yes, I AM A THIN GIRL. You can see my hip bones, and sometimes..you can even see my ribs!

BUT I FREAKING EAT. I love to eat. I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner AND snacks in between! I don't starve myself, and I actually never plan on it.

I exercise everyday.

(I'm sure I can guess your next sentence)

-Why do you need to work out? I bet it's only for attention..

Actually, I work out to stay healthy. Just because you're thin doesn't mean you're healthy, but just because you're skinny doesn't mean you can't be healthy either.

If it's not okay to go up to a girl and say: "You look like you've gained weight.."

Please be respectful and don't come up to me accusing me of losing weight. I work hard to stay consistent and get stronger. Especially with how negatively people talk about thin girls-it's almost an insult for anyone to say to another girl, "wow you look thin."

Try saying:

"You look really strong and healthy!"

We are so fixated on labeling people.

You're either fat, skinny, ugly, pretty, white, black, Asian, Indian, tall, or short..We forget that a lot of people don't want to be categorized or labeled. We want to be identified as something other than just a physical trait. The more you label someone, the more acceptable you're making it for the next girl to do the same.

As Ellen would say, "Be kind to one another".

I'm a thin girl who loves to eat.

Maybe you're an overweight girl who doesn't.

Either or, the most important thing at the end of the day is that we're being healthy. If we can both say we're staying true to that-it truly doesn't matter how big or small you are.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
