Before I ever decided what college I wanted to attend, I always knew I wanted to go Greek. Yes it probably sounds cliche but it's the truth. Greek life just seemed to fit my personality and once I got to college and through recruitment I knew that assumption was very true. With that being said when I read the article "15 Things Every Non-Greek Is Sick Of" I decided I want to correct some of the stereotypes that this author is using to generalize all Greek life.
1. "What sorority are you in?"
You go girl! Way to show you're independent and I'm happy that you're happy! But I am here to admit I have asked someone who I thought was in a sorority which sorority they were and just like you they were not Greek but news flash no one is perfect and I'll admit if I see you once and then in the future I see someone that looks like you chances are I will mistake you for someone else. Excuse me for not having a photographic memory.
2. "We do not pay for our friends."
Not a single girl in my sorority has ever received a dime of the dues I pay. I hate to be cliche but if I ever did pay for my sisters then I sure as heck did not pay even close to what they're worth.
3. *Handful of glitter blown into camera*
Glitter will never get old. Pictures will never get old. Adding glitter to pictures will never get old. Period. End of discussion.
4. "You should totally join Greek life!"
You should totally join, but only if it is something you think is for you. No one is holding you down saying you have to join Greek life because, trust me, if you don't want to be Greek we don't want you to be.
5. "OMG Little!"
Way to totally stereotype every sorority girl in America. Never have I once done the "high pitched screaming and running into each other's arms" but hey since you think this is just a sorority thing next time you see your best friend after not seeing her for a while try not to act excited.
6. "OMG Big!"
My big is the best. She will always be the best. She helps me with more than just sorority stuff she's a mentor in my life and someone I can always go to for advice.
7. "Sisters by chance, friends by choice."
Recruitment is a lot more than "judging each other on a week's worth of question and answers." This phrase means even though we may have become sisters we did not have to be friends. However, we chose to be. It's pretty self-explanatory.
8. "I joined my sorority looking for friends, but what I found were sisters."
Once again even though I joined a sorority looking for lifelong friends I found girls who are instead like family to me.
9. *Letters everywhere.*
I pay good money for my t-shirts and you expect me to not wear them because you're tired of seeing letters? Yeah not gonna happen.
10. "We don't haze." "No, like, I swear we don't."
I do not know what university you're at, but most universities have a no hazing policy not only on campus but also there is normally a no hazing policy within sororities. In my case, my state also has a very strict no hazing policy. Let's get our mind out of the typical sorority movie and start actually looking at the facts.
11. "Sorority squat!"
I'd like to see you and a group of 40 other women pose for a picture in less than 45 seconds without saying the phrase sorority squat
12. "Sisterhood!"
Sisterhood is the best thing you will ever experience. Yeah you're right not everyone always gets along but what else would you expect when you get over 40 women in the same room? But, news flash! We're all adults and we're really good at resolving our problems and moving on. No one pretends to like each other and yes it is a competition to be the best sorority. The competition includes best GPA, most community service hours and other characteristics your shallow assumption of sisterhood doesn't cover.
13. "It's a Greek thing."
If it is a Greek thing, the chances are that you wouldn't understand it even if we tried to explain it to you. Standards board, Infraction, PNM, Ritual, etc
14. "OMG love you Big/Little!"
I do love my big. She does so much for me and I couldn't be more thankful for her. I'm sorry but do you not tell your best friend you love her? Alrighty then.
15. "Ugh, I have *insert Greek life event here* tonight."
Maybe you should actually come to some of these Greek life events and see all the hard work that was put into them
I hope I was able to clear up some of your questions and broad judgement of sorority girls everywhere. I get it. Greek life may not be for everyone but let's not feed into the putting down of girls just because they decided to join a sorority.
