It's no recent news that this year the Nebraska Cornhusker football team has been facing adversity unlike ever before. On a warm July morning Coach Mike Riley received a call that his senior starting punter had been killed in a car crash. Sam Foltz was returning home from a kicking camp along with two other college football players from Wisconsin when tragedy hit. Foltz was not only a three year starting punter but also excelled in the classroom and in the community. He graduated from UNL in the spring of 2016 with a major in agronomy and was looking forward to playing his final season as a graduate student. He was a five-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and earned a spot on both the Brook Berringer and Tom Osborne Citizenship teams in 2016.
Nebraska football, fans, and friends have all done nothing but what's expected when it comes to honoring the late player which is by going above and beyond in everything they do to honor him. Every football game has been something new, each one more heartfelt and tear jerking than the last. Here are some of Nebraska's favorites.
The first time this year that Nebraska faced fourth down, they lined up with 10 players, no punter, and then let the play clock run down to zero while the team pointed to the sky. Fresno State then declined the delay of game penalty in honor of Sam.Each Husker player this year supported Foltz and kept him close this season with these SF 27 helmet decals.
Prior to the Oregon game, the opposing team set a bouquet of flowers on the 27 yard line.Illinois gave a signed 27 jersey to the Husker team during the captains meeting before the game.
Ohio State showed their respect by placing this emblem on their stadium wall during the Nebraska Ohio St. game.Country music super star, Brad Paisley performed in Lincoln, NE supporting #27 with this hat.Not only has this tragic event brought together a team but also a state and country as a whole. In a world full of hate and crime, these are the things i look forward to seeing and being apart of. RIP #27, you will never be forgotten.
