We are more than half way through 2015 and are expecting some huge movies being released at the end of the year, such as "Mockingjay Part 2" and "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." Not only are some awesome movies coming out in just a few short months, but there are movies currently killing it in the box office, such as Disney Pixar's "Inside Out" (which, if you haven't seen already you need to close this tab and go immediately!).
What is coming to theaters next year or in a few years, which films are being discussed, and which films do the fans want but are currently only hopes and dreams? Here is the scoop.
1. "23 Jump Street": Remember the end of the credits where Jenko and Schmidt go to all kinds of schools as their next undercover mission including dance school and culinary school? Well, some how they are going to make it work. Whether it be medical school as the credits portray or some sort of other mission, we can't wait to see what they come up with. One of the Directors, Phil Lord, states "We’ve found a way that we love that makes those imagined sequels canonical and yet does something that we haven’t told you about yet. The sequels are canon." A canon means certain material, such as the credits from "22 Jump Street", is accepted officially as part of the story.
2. "Beetlejuice 2": Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder have both mentioned coming back to their roles for "Beetlejuice 2". Director Tim Burton rarely does any sequels for his movies, but if "Beetlejuice 2" happens, Burton doesn't see it as a sequel. Burton says "It’s a bit too early to say but it’s definitely something that’s on my radar and something I’d love to do.” There is no release date set and the director and writers are still working on the script. With that being said, we could be seeing "Beetlejuice 2" in the near future but don't get your hopes up yet.
3. "Finding Dory": Back in April of 2013, ten years after "Finding Nemo" was released, Disney announced the sequel "Finding Dory". The first trailer will debut at Disney's Annual Fan Convention in Anaheim, California which runs between Aug. 13 to Aug. 16. "Finding Dory" will be swimming into theaters in June of 2016.
4. "Frozen 2": Disney is not going to just "Let it Go". Disney officially announced their plans for "Frozen 2" back in March of 2015 but there are currently no other details. "Frozen-Fever" was a short film starring Anna, Elsa, and the gang that appeared at the beginning of Disney's 2015 live action "Cinderella". Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have a huge task of trying to meet fans expectations and meeting the first films greatness. It will be interesting to see if there will be a king in the future for Arendale.
5. "Ghostbusters": Set to release in July of 2016, "Ghostbusters" is getting a reboot with a female cast including Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wig. The plot has yet to be revealed but whatever it is about the movie has some fierce women and, of course, some ghosts.
6. "How to Train Your Dragon 3": That's right folks! Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and the rest of the gang will be back with bigger and badder dragons. The plot of the story has yet to be revealed, but the movie has been set to release in June of 2018. Do you think Toothless will meet another Night Fury?
7. "Now you See Me: The Second Act": Michael Caine, Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, and Mark Ruffalo will be returning Illusionists in the 2016 sequel. Isla Fisher will not be returning due her pregnancy but there will be new faces like Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe. If all goes well with this film "Now You See Me 3" will be released in 2018.
8. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales": Johnny Depp will appear in the fifth movie in the series. According the the plot description "Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escapes from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him." Sound Familiar? That aside, film five will have some of the original cast members including Orlando Bloom, Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush. Maybe this film will include William Turner’s son?
9." Pitch Perfect 3": Anna Kendrik and Rebel Wilson will be returning to their roles in "Pitch Perfect 3". Kendrick posted a picture to her Instagram account just a few short weeks ago confirming the film. The film is set to release in 2017. Aca-awesome!
10. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2" (TMNT): "TMNT 2" is currently filming. Bad guy William Fitchtner along with Noel Fisher (Michelangelo), Megan Fox, Jeremy Howard (Donatello), Johnny Knoxville (Leonardo), and Alan Ritchson (Raphael) will be returning for the sequel. "The Turtles return to save the city from a dangerous threat" in June of 2016.
11. "The Goonies 2": "Hey, you guys!!". It has been 30 years since "The Goonies" was released. Though it could just be more talk, a TMZ reporter asked director Richard Donner if he was going to make another comic book movie. Donner responded "If you call 'Goonies 2' a comic book movie. We're doing a sequel". It is planned that the entire original cast will appear for the sequel. This is all the information about "The Goonies 2" as of now. Don't get too excited just yet.
12. "World War Z 2": This film is to be as close to Max Brook's novel as the first film was. Even after negative attitudes towards the first film, "World War Z" made $500 million in the box office. Brad Pitt is returning to the sequel and the film is set to release in 2017.
13. "Wreck it Ralph 2": "Wreck-it Ralph 2" is in the cards for Disney, but there is no release date or any other information yet. "Wreck-it Ralph" was a huge success for Disney in 2012 making $200 million worldwide. Director Rich Moore says he wouldn't want to give the sequel to anyone else and "We're really coming up with something good for Mario to do. To be able to present him in the sequel would be great." Things seemed to be delayed as Moore is currently working on other films. Hopefully, "Wreck-it Ralph" will be announced soon and we see Mario make a major appearance.
