If there’s one thing I’ve learned in college so far, it is to relax. This is probably a foreign concept for most, but letting loose isn’t always a bad thing. We work seven days a week, are involved in various organizations, juggle time with our friends, and have to give time to ourselves. It’s a lot to handle, and as the semester goes on our schedules only get busier. Here are some easy ways to relax in college:
1. Get away from whatever is stressing you out
Whether that is leaving your room or the library or having to go off campus briefly, it’s good to clear your mind and give it time to “reboot” and be fresh again. Staying in an environment that bothers you isn’t the best way to relax. Sometimes walking away and occupy your mind with something else is necessary.
2. Take a walk
I’ve always felt that taking a walk was really useful. You’re on your own and can just breathe and go at your own pace. Take a moment to realize where you are and what you're doing and breathe. It's nice to have a change of scenery .You’re also getting exercise, so it’s a win both ways.
3. Eat
A lot of the time, I forget to eat meals before doing a lot of work and realize my productivity is much lower than it would've been if I had literally had "brain food." It gives you a good excuse to snack on what you want. So go ahead, eat that extra doughnut it's okay.
4. Drink water
Drink water. Stay hydrated. It’s not just reserved for being active. It keeps you from getting headaches and also helps your skin. It also feels refreshing and you can never have too much.
5. Listen to music
Get lost in your work or just sit back and listen. Following the melodies of songs always help me unwind. It forces me to release tension in my body and not feel as anxious. I also like to sing along to my music, it gives me a sense of releasing built up energy and stress. Anything I like to listen to will automatically put me in some better mood.6. Sleep
Sleep is important. It is proven that it is the best source for regaining energy more than anything else out there. Don't be ashamed to take a nap or stop your work when it's late at night. Sleeping helps you circulate information through your head. You also create a lot better work when you've been well rested instead of typing an essay, half asleep at your desk.
7. Treat yo' self
This isn't a lie. It's okay to indulge every once in awhile; we all need a break at some point. Go out and get your favorite dessert or meal, buy that piece of clothing, take that extra nap. It's fine, you probably deserve it.
Whatever you choose to do to help yourself, remember that you're a human, not some type of robot and it's okay to take a break and give yourself time. Life moves quickly and can be really demanding but you can keep it from being extremely overwhelming. A lot of the time, people understand the stress that you may be going through and it's fine to reach out for help too. Work things through one step at a time, plan well, and give yourself time.
Good luck to you hard workers out there! Cheers.
