I've heard people say one too many times that having a relationship in college is a waste of time. They might argue that college is your time to be single and 'find yourself,' but for me, that happened a little differently. College was a huge adjustment for me and a relationship was the last thing on my mind. But before I knew it, I met one of the most amazing people I've ever known my freshman year of college. When I say that he has changed my life entirely, I'm not exaggerating. He made college home for me, which was something I never thought I'd say. And one year later I look back and can say with certainty that I would not change a thing. Strong relationships are always worth the effort, regardless of the situation.
These are the reasons why having a serious relationship in college is worthwhile.
1. Always having someone to vent to after having a bad day or just being overwhelmed from school.
Sometimes you just need to complain a little and get stuff off your chest, and having a person who truly cares for you is such a blessing.
2. Your relationship is more mature than just texts and phone calls.
A college relationship can be much different than a high school relationship. You get to know the person for who they truly are. You get to see them at their best and worst times, and it brings you even closer.
3. Someone to take long walks with around campus.
Sometimes a little stroll around your college campus can be the perfect time to talk and even gives you an excuse to hold hands.
4. You can plan and dream about your future together.
In college, you can get caught up thinking about your future a lot, and it's all the better when you can include that special someone into those plans.
5. Always having a late night study buddy.
Whether it's the library, a coffee shop, or your dorm room, it's always more fun to have them there with you to help keep you focused and motivated.
6. Having a built in support system while you're both working towards achieving your goals.
You can count on them to always want the best for you and push you to do things that will benefit you in the long run.
7. Having an excuse to dress up and go on spontaneous dates.
No more sweatpants and t shirts, you finally have an excuse to get fancy and go out for a night with the person you love, oh, and you can skip the dining hall food.
8. Someone is always there to have your back.
During such a crazy time in your life with so much change, they remain constant and that's a pretty incredible thing.
So despite what you might hear about college just being a big party with casual dating, you shouldn't be afraid of finding something long-term and worthwhile. When you find someone that can push you to be a better version of yourself, you should never let that go. It's this crazy, young and passionate love that you don't want to miss out on.
