A Reflection On The Ocean

Nothing is better than the way the beach makes a person feel.

A Reflection On The Ocean
Emma Mariano

From the time I was a little girl, the highlight of my summer was spending every weekend on the beach. Saturdays and Sundays were not truly the weekend in the summer unless my family made a trip to the beach. Being from the Ocean State, it was pretty convenient for my family and I to make frequent trips to the beach.

Something about the sound of the ocean and the smell of fresh air made me truly fall in love with the beach environment. To this day I still try to go to the beach as much as possible whenever the temperature hits above 70 degrees. For some reason I always find some sort of solace when I go to the beach.

It is a place where I can get a lot of thinking done, I can read a good book, or just take a really good nap. The beach has always felt like a second home to me. I go there alone a lot because it makes me feel happy. The way that the sun hits me when I’m there always makes me the perfect kind of tired so that I can have a lazy day and not feel compelled to do too much. I

Part of the reason for which I’m writing this is that this morning, I had time to think about this past semester of college and everything that has happened to me this year so far.

Today it was a lovely 80 degrees, something I can’t complain about seeing as it was snowing in Rhode Island just a few weeks ago. The sun’s rays were absolutely blinding and it wasn’t too windy making it the perfect beach day. Although, the water was still quite cold due to the fact that it is only the first week of May.

The ocean is something that definitely makes the beach feel even more like home. I could spend hours in the ocean. I love the way the waves feel and I love that the ocean is so full of life. I remember one time I was swimming off the coast of Block Island and I saw a stingray, which literally made my whole entire day.

My mom always told me that I should respect the ocean and when I was younger I did not really understand what this meant. Now that I’m 19, I kind of have an idea of what she was saying. The ocean is one of the greatest forces in the world, waves have so much power and if you’re not careful you can be pulled away from the shore.

The ocean’s power can be used as a metaphor for life I think. There are so many greater forces in the world that we do not have the power to control, but if we take these things into consideration we may be able to understand them better and know how to handle them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
