Reducing Stress For Finals

How to not think the world is over.

Reducing Stress For Finals

Getting stressed out due to finals week approaching us? I know I am. Finals week is the week where somehow something goes wrong no matter what you do. You have figured out the lowest grade possible to get on the exam to pass the class. You are to the point where survival is all that matters. Your brain is fried, and you have zoned out at least once. Allow me to share some tips to reduce stress for finals week.

1. Work out

If you have any free time in your busy schedule, go to the gym. Take a quick run or walk. Go swimming or do some weight lifting. It gives you something else to think about. Working out releases endorphins and reduces anxiety.

2. Take a break from studying

You deserve it and it is unhealthy to stare at a textbook for six hours straight. You will not learn anything by doing that. Get up and stretch your legs, get a drink of water.

3. Go hang with friends

Hanging out with your buddies can be nice, but remember you have to study too. Maybe seeing a movie or getting some coffee and chatting will take your mind off of the exams coming up.

4. Don't cram for the exam

Professors have told you since day one, don't do all of your studying the night before the test. They are right. In order to be fully prepared for your exam, you should be studying each week. If you didn't, though, start at least two weeks before finals week.

5. Schedule a time and place for your studying

Nothing is worse than cramming than not having a plan for how and when you are going to study. The material seems overwhelming and complicated to comprehend. Generally, studying in your room, especially if you in a residence hall, isn't the best idea. There are too many distractions present and probably end up cleaning your room instead of studying. Go to the library and study. It is quieter and there are fewer distractions. Sometimes you get free food, too.

6. Have your materials ready to study

When you are ready to study, make sure you have everything you need. You don't want to make a trip back to grab that calculus answer key so you know which problems you are missing.

7. Eat healthy

Don't carb-fest during finals week. Yes you will want that cheesy pizza and pop, but that will make you feel tired and less motivated to study. Eat fresh fruits and veggies. Don't forget to hydrate with water.

8. Stay away from Netflix

If you are like me, you are addicted to Netflix. Starting new shows is great but not when you are supposed to be studying. No Netflix breaks, because you will not stop watching after one episode.

9. Don't drink

Having fun with your friends, as I said, is a good idea. Getting drunk the day of an exam—not so much. You will feel horrible and your grade on the exam will show that.

10. Remember to sleep

Sleep is crucial during finals week. Even if you can't get a full eight hours, some sleep is better than no sleep. Sleeping through an exam is the same as not going to the exam.

Hopefully these tips will help you for a stress-free finals week. And good luck on your exams—you'll do fine.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
