On Sunday, April 29, the long-awaited premiere of Game of Thrones season six happened.
And oh the outrage it caused.
Many people found it lacking substance, you really didn't get a good view of where any character stands. Mainly, all of their lives suck right now. Arya is blind. Dany has been taken hostage by a new Khalasar. Sansa is stuck with Theon and almost got recaptured by Ramsey's men, but luckily Brienne saved her ass (with the help of Podrick, naturally). And no one knows where Bran is.
Oh, and Jon Snow is still dead.
But the end of the episode revealed something interesting...The Red Woman, or Melisandre if you want to use her actual name, the woman known for seducing men in order to serve the God of Light, took off her necklace and revealed that she's actually an old woman... or is she.
Follow me here, it might be a stretch, but it's a stretch worth taking.
There are articles claiming the creators screwed up because there was another scene where she was not wearing the now infamous necklace and was not an old woman as a result. You can check out the article here. It also includes a fan theory as to why that might have happened beyond just a lapse in judgement by the creators. Now, in my opinion, this show is much too well planned out to have a mistake like that. They know their fan base would catch on in an instant, as they did. So I have my own fan theory...
In another episode, we saw that another priest of the light, Thoros of Myr, brings Beric Dondarrion back to life after being killed by The Hound. So we know that there is power to resurrect. But magic always has a price. Beric claims that each time he comes back, a little piece of him is lost. He's been resurrected six times, and each one results in him being chipped away.
Now perhaps it's possible that the reason the necklace glowed red as she took it off was because she was putting part of her life, her youth, into it. She saw something in Jon Snow, we saw that before. She believed him to be someone important. She saw he was dead. So maybe this is her Hail Mary, to redeem her faith.
She was wrong about Stannis, and she can't afford to be wrong again. So maybe, just maybe, that necklace is the key to bringing Jon back. Perhaps, if it's placed on Jon, her life that she has given up, her beauty and youth, will be given to him. But let's remember he will be less. The creators of the show state "Jon Snow is dead." and I agree. The Jon Snow we knew was dead. But he'll be back. Yet a little piece of him will be lost, as is the toll of magic.
