Greek Recruitment is probably one of the most stressful moments I’ve ever witnessed! There is so much work put into it and there is so much drama that comes out during this process. You have no idea! It’s crazy to see how many rules are broken during this time. It’s usually best if orgs try to go by the book and follow the rules. It takes some stress away and you don’t get in trouble for it. You don’t have to worry about getting caught or being called out. You just focus on your org’s health and recruitment at this time. Plus, it doesn’t make you look like a complete liar when you talk to potentials about your org!
I am publicity chair for Sigma Omega Nu Latina Interest, now Multicultural, Sorority. I take care of all the flyers, brochures, and posts on social media. So far my tasks have not been too crazy to handle, but I have seen some of my sisters stressed about recruitment because it does take up a lot of our time. We have to plan how our recruitment nights will go. We have to plan a budget and try our best to not go over it. We also have to make sure our recruitment shirts arrive on time and most importantly we have to hope that the potential new members are actually comfortable around us. They have to know who we are as individuals. It’s only normal.
It is actually really fun getting to know all of the new students, but it gets nerve wracking at times as well. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable randomly talking to someone new. I am a really shy person so that is definitely a hard step for me. I like to take my time in getting to know people. There are other orgs in school who just swoop up the new people at school and I’m just like how??? I guess they’re just confident in themselves. Luckily some of my sisters have that confidence and are able to create natural conversations with others. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to get to know our potential new members.
I am super excited to see the potential new members this weekend and I can’t wait to see who decides to join our org. Recruitment week may be hectic, but it brings you back to why you even joined in the first place. When we ask the potential new members why they’re interested in Greek life, they usually answer with heartfelt answers. It makes you think “Wow that was so me when I first joined,”. I just hope for the best this weekend. I hope the potentials get to know us and I really do hope that we answer all of their questions. I’m sure we’ll have a great addition to our org! There will be so many new memories that we will keep forever and I think that is a big reason why we enjoy being in a Greek organization!
