The holiday season has begun and with that comes a lot of family time. Some dread these family gatherings. Personally, I love them.
Every kid leaves for college thinking that they are so excited to be on their own and get away from home for the first time in their life, but in the end there’s something that is missing when you can’t see your family as often as you did before. Don’t get me wrong, freedom and college is great, but there is something that seems to be missing when my whole family can’t be together.
I come from a large Italian family, so therefore loads of homemade food, talks that consist of people who never learned the concept of ‘inside voices’, people who can’t talk without their hands and the same people who will always be by your side. You may not understand this if you don’t come from a crazy Italian family, but you will definitely understand if you come from a large and close family, as well. These people are all true blessings.
They are your first friends.
You automatically come into this world with the best friends you could ever get. You grow up with siblings and cousins that you know you would do anything for. Basically, you already know that when you get married your bridal party is going to be huge just because you want as many of them as possible standing by your side. They are there for every big event that happens in your life and no friend you have made along the way can say that. Siblings and cousins are more than just family, because in the end, they become your best friends.
No place like home.
There are always those cheesy movie lines about how there is “no place like home”, but really, there actually is no place like home. Obviously there are times where everyone can’t stand each other and they can’t wait to get away, but there is always a time when you want to go back and surround yourself with everyone again. Holiday traditions turn into your favorite past time, family meals are irreplaceable and the laughs and memories will last a lifetime. In the end, there is no place like home (especially for the holidays).
The more, the merrier.
In my opinion, bigger is better. When there are more people, there is more food, more laughs, more hugs, more advice and more stories. What could be better than that? With so many people around to share your time, there is never a time or place where you could be bored.
They are always there for you, no matter what.
Even though every family fights and has his or her differences, there is always a sense of unconditional love for everyone at the end of the day. No matter what, they will have your back when times get hard. They are the people who have been there for you since day one, and they will be the people standing by you for all your life. They celebrate with you, cry with you, love you and they have your back over anyone else.
