Being a camp counselor is one of the best opportunities that I have ever had in my life! There is just something about being at camp for two months out of the summer and being able to pour into the hearts of the campers. You are able to see lightbulbs go off when a child finally gets what you have been teaching them about God and you are able to make some of the greatest friends you will ever have in your life. There is just something about working in a camp setting that brings you closer to God as you reach out to serve those who might come through the gates of camp. Here are some reasons that working at a summer camp is the best opportunity you can have!
1. You can be as crazy as you want without being judged!
You have to act crazy sometimes just to get through the day. Other times you have to be crazy just so the campers will see how fun something will be. The crazier you are, the more likely it is for you to get the campers involved as well.
2. You will meet some of the greatest friends you will ever meet while working at camp!
I have met so many different people through camp and I have made some of the best friends I have ever had there. We know how to share our burdens with one another and we can rely on one another when the going gets tough, not just at camp but out in the "real" world.
3. You are able to learn so much through the campers you encounter!
You go into camp thinking that you are going to teach your campers so much about God and how to be in a relationship but you get so much more than they ever will out of the words they say. They are so much smarter than we think and sometimes you just sit and there and think where in the world did they learn that from?
4. You are able to grow in your relationship with Christ so much in such a short amount of time!
You learn to rely on God in a different way. You have to start the summer seeking God and making sure that you are having a daily quiet time with Him so that once you get to the end of the summer and you are running on fumes, you can draw on that time and be able to continue to draw comfort from Him.
There are so many more reasons that I could state about working as a camp counselor but there is simply not enough time! Camp is such a great opportunity and I would encourage anyone and everyone to be a camp counselor at least once. The life lessons you will learn are just too numerous for you to pass up this kind of opportunity!
