Reasons Why College Students Come Home for the Weekend

We do not just come home for our family....

Reasons Why College Students Come Home for the Weekend
Logan Crews

College students come home for breaks very often, but some students go home just for weekends, given that they live close enough and have a way to get there. There are many of reasons as to why they come home on weekends. I know these are the ones that top my list.

1. The food

School food is awful. Nothing beats coming home to a nice home-cooked meal, one that you know what is exactly in it. Eggs are actually eggs and are not cooked in a bag. It is nice to come and have food that tastes the way it is supposed to and does not keep you guessing.

2. Laundry without having to pay

Doing laundry at school is very expensive and time consuming. Not only that, but you also have to worry about getting your laundry on time before someone else takes them out of the washer/dryer. So why not wait until you get home and you do not have to pay? And you also do not have to worry about getting it on time.

3. Pets

Let's be real, college students only really come home to see their pets. It is something they go without while at school. They can tell their parents all they want, but their pet is their number one priority. Most people have connections to their pets that help with stress, anxiety, etc. Going without that for a long period of time can sometimes be bad.

4. No responsibilities

When college students go home, they love the fact that they do not have any responsibilities. They do not have to worry about other people, because they are back in their home. They do not have to think about where they are going to get food next or having to really clean up after themselves.

5. Not having to wear shower shoes

We do not have to wear shower shoes! We are in a bathroom where we do not have to worry about other people and we also know it is clean. Nothing feels better than being able to take a shower without shoes.

So parents of college students, let's face it, your college student most likely is not coming home for good ole family time. Most likely, they just want a home-cooked meal, no responsibilities, and their pets. Please do not take it to heart at all, it's just how we are. We do miss our parents very much, but we do not know how to say or show it. We love our parents for all that they do for us and sometimes we take that for granted. Just know we are actually home for you too, to see you and to be loved and babied by you again.

For college students: make sure you show your parents how much you really do love them and spend time with them. They do a lot for you to be able to go to school. They support you in all you do. So do not fight and argue with them.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
