Vaping. The new trend sweeping the world. It was originally used to help people quit smoking but now it is used by teens and young adults for fun and pleasure. Many people that vape usually think that vaping has no effect on their body but there are many disadvantages.

1. Nicotine harms the brain

According to a 2014 study reported in the European Review of Medical Pharmacology, nicotine has a major effect on the development of the brain. The studies concluded that vaping severely slows down or stops the development of the prefrontal cortex while impairing cognitive function and processing. In addition, people that vape perform tasks related to memory and thinking poorly compared to people who do not vape.

2. Vaping is a gateway to other substances

When people become hooked to nicotine, they keep using it until they cannot feel the effects that it once gave them. This leads to the urge to feel the same effects that nicotine once had so they use more powerful drugs such as marijuana. Once the effect of that drug wears off they will keep cycling through more powerful drugs until they overdose which leads to death. In 2016, overdose took over 64,000 lives in the United States alone. A study concluded that people who vape are twice as likely to try more intense drugs.

3. Concealed chemicals

Vaping producers are not legally required to reveal any of the chemicals, additives, or flavors in their product. Vape producers can include anything they want in the vape products that are unhealthy and damaging to health. Also, the coils in the vape produce particles of metal and various chemicals that are known to increase risk for cancer. A recent Japanese study shows that vapes contain about ten times more the amount of carcinogenic chemicals of standard tobacco. This study disproves the idea that vaping is less dangerous than smoking.

4. Damage to lungs and immune system

Chemicals inhaled through vaping can damage lung tissue which leads to inflammation of the lung tissue. A study by the University of Athens revealed that vaping can restrict the amount of oxygen passing through your airways. Another study by the University of Indiana showed that the vapor produced by E-cigarettes has damaging effects on the endothelial cells in your lungs. Endothelial cells protect your lungs from threatening infections, so damaging them will not be good for your immune system.

5. High risks of cancer

Even if someone vapes without nicotine, they are not safe. Vape liquids contain multiple solvents to help flavorings dissolve into them. When heated in an E-cigarette, at least one solvent transforms into a worrisome substance called carbonyls. These carbonyls contain substances such as formaldehyde(a colorless gas used to produce many substances such as glue) and other substances that are known for causing cancer. The effects of these various carcinogens may not show up now, but they will show up in the future.

6. The long-term effects of vaping are not known

Since vaping is a new trend, the long-term effects of it are not known. A countless number of chemicals are established in the body when someone vapes and the effects of those various chemicals will have to show up soon. Some long-term effects of vaping have already arose such as development of Lung cancer and Chronic Bronchitis.

Provided these facts, vaping is not as safe as you think. Now are you still wanting to vape?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
