"Healthy Foods" That Quite Actually, Aren't Super Healthy

Now that we've dipped our little toes (or in my case, kinda big lol) into 2019, I've already observed people around me on health food crazes and diets.

First of all, boo to diets, but that's for another day. ANYWAY, I would consider myself a health guru girl. Does this mean I have a 6-pack? No. I have a flabby but relatively lean body, but am pretty dang knowledged on health inside and out. We love a flabby gym queen.

But now that there's a wave of healthy food obsessions due to the insane amount of resolutions being made, I wanna just pop my big toe in here to say, HEY! WATCH OUT!!!!! Especially on a college campus, people can easily believe they're eating healthy when in reality that excessive avocado toast is hurting. So here's my big toe. Dipping into your resolutions. To warn you. Here are some relatable, much-loved foods that aren't always the best for you.

Smoothies/Acai Bowls

Giphy

Okokokok so. Hear me out. Actual legit homemade smoothies? GOOD for you. Pop a little yogurt in with your favorite fruits and that's awesome. What isn't the move is a typical, affordable chain selling you highly sugared, "low fat" smoothies or bowls just packed with syrups and kinds of sweetener. If you're gonna get a smoothie, make it yourself, or do some ~research~ on your favorite shops. Be annoying. Ask what they're putting in it. Be that Girl. Watch that Scene. Dig in it Dancing Queen.

Eggs

This discovery genuinely had me like: :O. 1-2 is okay and all that. I'm not an egg fiend. But if every morning, you're having like 3-4, that's gonna hurt over time. Eggs are a saturated fat, which is okay, except when you are an egg LOVER. Too much of that will just hurt your body. Is no food safe?

Avocado Toast

Giphy

Apparently no food IS safe after all. It's still up for debate; I frikin' ADORE it and love smacking an egg on it for a brunch. BUT, kiddos, we can't solely thrive off avo toast. Sorry. It's similar to peanut butter in how it technically IS a healthy, good fat. It's not like you're shoving burgers down your throat. Avocados are shown to help weight loss/heart health, but you gotta do this in moderation. Like, don't pack it on everyday because girls on Instagram say it's healthy. I love it, but we gotta keep it as a once in a while meal.

Quick pit stop at peanut butter:

Giphy

I feeeeel like people relatively know it's not AWESOME for you, but here I am to announce it. It's similar to avocado toast, in how, yeah, put some PB on your toast for a fit breakfast -- just not everyday. A friend of mine would snack on a spoon of peanut butter everyday, and found that he was gaining significant weight in the next month. So. Moderation. Even though some days I want to come home and guzzle it down, moderation.

Nut/Trail Mixes

Giphy

They aren't AWESOME for you. At this rate, I'm sure you're like ok so what CAN I EAT. It's not like it's fatal, but it's another one of those "yoooo eating this doesn't ACTUALLY make you an Instagram model". It's a good caloric snack for those who just worked out, but peanuts are pretty heavy and you know, they're basically peanut butter. Connect the dots.

Multigrain bread

Giphy

Is this better than white bread? Yes. But there's still some wonky flour in there, and sometimes sugars (SUGARS??? in my BREAD??). Choosing wheat when you order a sandwich is the move, but it's not a God send or anything.

:( Diet :( Coke

Giphy

This is targeted at me. I'm writing this to myself. Team, Diet Coke is WAY better for you than Coke, but… it's still not great for you. No one has ACTUALLY confirmed how horrible it is, and many studies are up in the air, but just drink water. :( :(

Horrible news: Pretzels

Giphy

They're pretty bleh for you. It's a lot of salt, obviously, but a LOT of white/bleached flour. It's super carby, and when I realized it, I was Upset.

MILK.

Giphy

MILK?????????? The day I realized that hey, consuming copious amounts of dairy isn't awesome for you, was the day my childhood was wrecked. I was taught to drink a glass everyday. Turns out when you're not a bodybuilder (which hey I did rowing in high school so I WAS), dairy isn't awesome for you. Also cheese isn't that great for you. I'm sad.

Salad

Giphy

Not all of it is healthy. If you're getting a salad, yet YEETING some ranch on it then putting bacon/egg/chicken salad etc. on it, that is NOT gonna do your plans to get super fit in a week after that kid from Alpha Omega Sigma Chi Pi invited you to formal last second. I was overwhelmed just writing that. Tbh, just watch your dressing choices and you should be all good.

But don't fret! I still consume basically everything on this list tbh. Health is hard in college. Just try to be conscious, ask more questions about ingredients, and watch for what's going in your food. It's 2019, so even though that means nothing on a grand scale, let's act like it does and eat a little bit less cheese (like one less bite of it ok nothing crazy).

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
