It’s now that month where it seems like all your friend's and family’s birthdays hit you all at once. Having a hard time figuring out what birthday gift to give everyone can get your mind wondering why there are so many September birthdays in the first place.
According to a United States birthday table graph created by The New York Times, the most common birthday is September 16th, while the most common conception date is December 24th (Christmas Eve). Well, now it’s all making sense. End of the year holidays such as Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Years are all within close proximity of each other.
Winter is the time to snuggle up to your significant other, and the holidays are about being with your loved ones. So it makes sense why couples will feel a stronger desire to cuddle up with one another this time of year. Obviously, it increases chances of conception among many couples and explains why so many people are born in September.
The most common birth month is actually August. However, if you don’t count its extra day (August has 31 days, while September only has 30), then the most common month is September.
Even though the holidays can play a big role for parents conceiving in the winter, there have also been medical explanations for it.
A study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology suggests a few hypotheses such as "deterioration of sperm quality during summer, seasonal differences in anterior pituitary-ovarian function caused by changes in the daylight length, and variation in quality of the ovum or endometrial receptivity."
Well there you have it. Whether it be from the holidays and cuddle season or from the female and male reproductive issues in the summer, the seasonal change is the ultimate reason birthdays are more common in September.
