7 Reasons Gen Zers And Millennials Should Learn How To Cook Homemade Meals From Scratch

One thing I think many of us here can agree on is we love food. There's nothing like a good meal when we are hungry, especially when it's cooked from scratch. The thing is, everybody wants to eat, but nobody wants to cook.

When I was growing up, I had my mom, aunties, cousins and grandmas cooking around me daily. The majority of the time I was getting home cooked meals made with love, from scratch.

Now that I'm older, I'm not around family as much. I haven't been in the kitchen with my family since I was 9 years old, I wasn't taught how to cook by my family. I'm now 18 years old and I don't know how to cook a meal for more than one.

I'd be more embarrassed to admit this if many of you didn't relate. But you do. It is no secret that the majority of millennials DON'T cook.

1.  You can make it how you like it.

When you cook for yourself, you can make it how you want. If there is an ingredient you can't eat, you don't have to worry about it. You can substitute it for something else. If you want to add your own mix to a dish to make it your own you can! You can do whatever you want because you are cooking.

2. You won’t always have to eat out.

I am one for eating out when I need to, or in my case mostly everyday. But I know it gets old eating the same three fast food restaurants nearby. Your tastebuds start to get sad having to have the #5 for the third time this week. Also, if you cook you save money from not eating out. You can get multiple servings worth of food for the price of one on fast food meal.

3. You’ll become healthier effortlessly.

Food that comes from yourself will be automatically healthier. You can buy organic ingredients and get food without all of those GMOs. You can be sure your food is fresh and cooked properly. You don’t have to add any of those extra unnecessary ingredients

4. You can satisfy every craving.

If you're not cooking you have to just go with whatever is available to you. If you don't want anything there, you just won't eat. If you know how to cook you can cook whatever you want to eat.

5. You won’t have to worry about ever being hungry.

If you don’t have any money to eat out it won’t be a problem if you know how to cook. Instead of random things just being in the kitchen that you don’t know what to do with, you will know how to come up with a meal from scratch. If you know how to cook from scratch you will be able to make something out of anything you have and won’t have to worry about going hungry.

6. People will love you.

Cooking is something that is highly impressive and highly appreciated. If you know how to cook, more people will find you appealing and make you look impressive. Knowing how to cook is truly a good skill. People also associate cooking with being marriage material. I also aspire to be that grandma whose grand kids love their cooking. I want to be the food they look forward to eating in the future so I’ll be the favorite grandma haha.

7. You might want to cook for your family one day.

Some people dream of one day having a spouse and kids. If you want to have a family, you need to be able to cook a variety of meals for them some days, you and your spouse. If you don't know have to cook your family will be spending way too much money, getting really unhealthy, and getting tired of the food because they will have to eat out regularly. I don't know if it's just me but I want to be able to give my kids what they want for dinner.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
