Reasons Why I Love Murray State University
Murray State

Four years ago, I made my first trip to Murray State and fell in love with the campus. Murray State became my top choice for college after that trip. Now, four years later, I couldn't image going to college anywhere else and here are some reasons why:

1. President Davies.

What other college president takes selfies with students or makes omelettes on snow days in the dining hall? President Davies takes a hands-on approach to running a university. He makes an effort to get to know the students. He listens to their concerns and takes action to better the situation. He is a well-known face on campus, and I couldn't imagine Murray State without him.

2. The organizations.

Murray State makes it so easy to get involved on campus. There are various events throughout the year where the organizations set up tables to share who they are and what they do. These events make it simple to meet people and figure out what you want to get involved in. There is a numerous and diverse amount of organizations on campus, ranging from major-related to religious to Greek life and anything in between.

3. The professors.

The professors are amazing. Most of the classes are small, so the professors are able to get to know more than just your name. They are always willing to work with you, in and out of class. If you do not understand the material or are on the brink of failing, the professors go the extra mile to help you if you ask them.

4. The resources.

Murray State is full of great, free resources for students. Tutoring is available for most classes and majors. The writing center is the place to go to get help on papers. The oral communication center will help you become more confident and less nervous about giving a speech or that final presentation that is worth 25% of your grade. Career services provides many services for students. According to the Murray State website, "career services can help you write a resume, write a cover letter, provide interview consultation, find a full-time or part-time job, find an internship, and choose a course of study." These are just a few examples of the resources offered.

5. The town.

Murray, Kentucky, is the most quaint town I have ever been to. It may be a fairly small town, but the charisma it possesses makes up for the size. I mean, it isn't named the "Friendliest Small Town in America" for nothing. The residents are so nice and welcoming, on and off campus. Most of the town caters to college students with open arms and Murray State discounts.

These are just a few reasons why I love Murray State. I am so glad I made the decision to attend this university. I am forever grateful for the people I have met, the experiences I gained, and the lessons I learned during my time as a Racer.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
