“I’ve always said it, but the reason people like our band is that we create music in the way that we consume it. It’s a generational thing. Nowadays, it’s fine to listen to Fleetwood Mac and A$AP Rocky. You can be a 17-year old and it’s cool to like the Backstreet Boys! Everything’s really weird because of the Internet, and I think that we’re a band that represents that idea, and people can relate to that.” - Matty from The 1975
I'm a guy who's really into his music. Growing up, I considered myself to be pretty open to all genres; however, I mostly listened to rap, hip-hop, R&B, and some rock. Around two years ago, I remember spending the night at my cousin's fraternity house, and began listening to music. The first song he put on was called "Chocolate" by a band named The 1975. I instantly developed a liking for the song. It was catchy. I became interested in the band and wondered if they had released any other songs. After listening to their first few singles, I began to realize how much I liked the band and their music. I listen to The 1975's music more than any other band or artist, as it'ss become a huge part of my life. These are some of the reasons why I love the band and their music so much:
1. Matty Healy
Matthew Healy is currently one of my favorite singers. He was born in London and raised in Manchester, United Kingdom. Not only does he have a distinct, yet awesome, mongrel accent, he also has an incredible voice. I'm also a huge fan of Matty because he's a great performer. I've seen videos of concerts, and he always ensures that he's exerting 110% at every show, making sure that the fans are having a great time and completely immersed in the band's music. He's a man of few words outside of singing, and has also gone through a lot in the past, overcoming a cocaine addiction. I have a lot of respect for people like him, who have encountered hardships and been able to overcome their struggles.
2. Their Name
Those who have heard of the band often question how they came up with their name. In the past, the band was formerly known as Talkhouse, The Slowdown, Bigsleep, and Drive Like I Do. Eventually, Healy decided that the band was going to be known as The 1975 after finding the month and year of a specific date written in the back of a book he found. I'm such a fan of the name of the band is because it gives off a mysterious vibe, and a sense of uncertainty that ties into the authenticity of the band. In many ways, a name like The 1975 is fitting, because many of their songs challenge those listening to think about and analyze their lyrics. In my opinion, one of the most interesting aspects about their music and lyrics is that many people are still unable to determine the meaning of some of their songs. It always leaves certain lyrics and words that are spoken open for interpretation.
3. They're Different
The band's genre is specifically classified under indie rock. Something that I admire about the band is that they're not afraid to be different, and they always present themselves as the people they truly are. This notion comes across in their music. The band often preaches themes of love, sex, drugs, hope, fear, and struggle. Their songs are very relatable, because they appeal to the generation who are currently growing up and facing new experiences in their everyday lives, whether they be relationships or attempting to make a difficult decision in general. I've found that my favorite songs by The 1975 are the ones that are not listened to as frequently as their others, and songs that most people are not aware of. These songs include: "You," "Woman," "Undo," "Haunt // Bed," "Head.Cars.Bending," "Antichrist," and "Facedown."
In the future, I hope to attend one of The 1975's concerts. My friend had the privilege of attending one, and deemed it a "life-changing experience." I'm also very interested to stay in tune with what's in store for the band in the next coming year. Recently, they announced they would be releasing an album called "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It." The band is branching out from their dark roots of the past, and even changed their logo from black and white to pink and white, a representation of a new beginning for the direction of their music.
