For many years, people have stereotyped young adults in sororities and fraternities as spoiled brats who do nothing but party. I can honestly say that I used to be one of those people. I actually refused to go through recruitment as a freshman because I didn't want to be "one of those girls." Then, I got a job as a nanny for a Phi Mu Kappa Iota alumna. She was always talking about how much fun she had and how much she loved it! With encouragement from her, as well as my mom, I went through formal recruitment in the fall of 2015. It's one of the best things that I've ever done and these are the reasons why.
1. It gave me a life.
Before I joined Phi Mu Fraternity, I literally went to class and went home. I wasn't involved in anything! Phi Mu has given me something to do other than homework (trust me... breaks can do this girl some good). There's always something going on, whether it be socials, meetings, semi-formals, etc.
2. It gave me a family away from home.
I come from a large and very close family. I have two younger sisters and my mom is one of my best friends. It is agony being away from them. I suddenly had no one to eat with, shop with, or even ride around and jam out to music with in the car. When I joined Phi Mu, I suddenly had 120 sisters— give or take a few— to do all of these things with.
3. It gives me even more of a reason to be the best "me' I can be.
Our creed is something that I will forever live by. It makes me strive to do better— not just for me, but my whole sorority. In today's society, one person's actions can ruin the reputation of the whole chapter, so I strive to be a role model for my sisters and others who may be interested in Phi Mu.
4. It has given me the chance to meet the best people.
My sorority has given me the chance to meet people who will forever hold places in my heart. There are so many different personalities and you learn to love each person for her own specific reasons. This sisterhood lets you meet alumnae who can give you various opportunities outside of school. Community service has always been a huge part of my life and being in Phi Mu gives me the chance to continue that on a much broader spectrum. It gives me a chance to meet amazing people in the community, who are willing to help out with anything and everything.
Phi Mu has changed my life in ways that I could never explain. I have met some of my best, life-long friends. My Big and I are like the same person and I could not even imagine my life without her or my "phi-erce pham!"
