11 Reasons I'm Glad I Waited To Go Greek

Good things come to those who wait.

11 Reasons I'm Glad I Waited To Go Greek

Prior to college, joining a sorority was never on my radar. Even after I started school, I never pictured myself joining a chapter and had no desire to. I sort of fell into my sorority by chance, and I'm so thankful that I did, but I'm also glad that I spent a semester unaffiliated before rushing. There are many reasons why it's okay, even good, to wait a semester or year before going Greek.

1. You learn things on your own.

College is a big transition. It's a new setting, new people and a new culture. These changes can be difficult to acclimate to without the added stress of a fraternity or sorority, so waiting to rush can give you time to get a handle on everything else.

2. You can figure out school.

After all, it is the reason you came to college. Your classes will require more time and effort than in high school, and a semester or year to get some credit and experience under your belt can be a huge help with the adjustment.

3. You can save money.

The "poor college student" stereotype exists for a reason. During your first semester you're buying everything for your dorm, purchasing textbooks for the first time and buying your own groceries and other basics. Every cent counts, and waiting to rush gives you a chance save before starting to pay dues.

4. You make friends outside your chapter.

You'll find some of your best friends in your chapter, but it can be easy to forget to branch out if you rush immediately. Being unaffiliated at the beginning of your college career means not instantly having 200 people to drag to events and sit with in class, so it forces you to put yourself out there and get to know the people around you who you'd miss out on meeting otherwise.

5. And get involved in other ways.

Greek organizations are great for getting involved, but there's definitely something to be said for going out on your own and finding groups and activities that interest you. It's also another great way to meet people. (See no. 3).

6. Smaller pledge classes.

Joining a chapter is exciting, but also a little terrifying. You're entering an organization of strangers that all know one another and there is tons to learn. Spring rush typically brings in lower numbers than fall recruitment, and this can ease you into things more gently and give you the chance to form better relationships with members of your pledge class.

7. You get to know the chapters.

They say to trust the recruitment system, and a majority of times it works. That being said, waiting to rush gives you longer to get to know members of each chapter and gain deeper insight into whole chapters.

8. Recruitment is easier.

Spring rush is often much less taxing than formal recruitment. If you decide to wait a year or more, fall recruitment also becomes easier once you've heard the tips, tricks and stories. Plus, if you've made friends in different chapters, they can help promote you within their individual organizations.

9. You can make a better decision about rushing at all.

Greek life isn't for everyone. That's completely fine, but it's better to decide that before going through all the trouble, time and expense of joining only to drop shortly after.

10. You can relate to more people.

Sad but true, there's often a clear-cut divide between Greeks and non-Greeks. Taking time before joining a chapter can give you insight into the worlds of both groups, the ability to identify with and relate to people from each.

11. You can get to know yourself better.

I was a totally different person during freshman move-in than I was during rush only a semester later and I'm fairly certain had I joined at the beginning of the year, I would have ended up in another chapter entirely. College is a time to grow and change, and it's important to make sure before you enter into something as involved as a sorority or fraternity that you're confident and comfortable with who you are as an individual.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
