Going to a small private liberal arts college was a decision I made because I felt at home (and the school was near the beach), but I feared that because I chose an unknown school that it would harm my future. However, I know now that the exact opposite will occur. Here's why I am grateful to go to a small private liberal arts college.
1. You will know almost everyone.
I know, the idea of knowing everyone sounds terrible, and let's be honest, it sometimes can be; however, knowing everyone also means you have plenty of networking opportunities. This means the friends you have in your own major, as well as others, will be able to put in a good word for you or lend a hand if you need one.
2. Being involved in multiple things is more attainable.
From Greek life to academic clubs, the list of different things to be involved in is endless and you aren't fighting a bunch of people to join something. My resume grows by the minute, and I can honestly say going to a smaller school has opened so many doors for me.
3. Sometimes extra funding goes to you and your different activities.
Remember all those clubs you were able to join? Well now, extra funding can come your way. One of my favorite school activities, doubles as an academic activity, and the school often pays for our accommodations, our transportation, and even our meals. It is nice to actually feel the benefits of funding, instead of the funding being lost and never seen by the students.
4. There are more leadership opportunities.
Smaller school, less people, and this means that your resume will improve by your ability and opportunity to be a leader! More organizations will be smaller, but the surplus of organizations will allow you to rise to the top in many of the clubs you were able to join.
5. You have a great community to hold you together.
I have seen my community stand together through many trials and come together in times of sadness and hold each other up. I know that if something tragic happens my school will come together and hold their fellow peers up. Yes, this can happen at a larger school, but it means more when your close knit community is able to celebrate together and also grieve together.
A small school isn't for everyone, but I am grateful that it is what I chose, because I have been able to grow and find myself, as well as build my resume. When I graduate from my unknown school I know that I was where I was supposed to be because I was able to join so many things and push myself out of my comfort zone.
