4 Reasons To Go Greek

In the midst of college classes starting back up again, there is also the hectic Rush Week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or an upperclassman, I seriously encourage all students to give Greek life a chance. Joining a fraternity or a sorority can do a tremendous amount of great things for every student who joins. I honestly wish I would have taken advantage of rushing while I was a freshman because I feel like I am not as involved or I don't get to do as much as my other friends who partake in Greek life. I have seen my friends go from shy to outgoing just because Greek life helps you become more social as you become involved with a group of people who are just like you, or maybe even different from you. To all of you reading this article, give Greek life a chance, or at least give college involvement a chance. College is a time to really find who you are and to explore all your interests, so why not do that with a group of people who support you and have similar interests? Here are reasons to look forward to joining Greek life:

1. Recruitment week.

I feel that you truly don't know what you are capable of until you have survived recruitment week. From my friends' experiences and talking to those who help with recruitment, it is a time when you really understand who you are and what you stand for. To be honest, I feel that it benefits those who are freshmen as they really find out who they are as a person and who "their people" are. For those who haven't joined sorority life, it's more of a hit or miss when making friends. People have the thought, Hopefully these new friends I am making in the hallway are people who have the same morals and values as me and support my decisions as well. Recruitment week connects people to others who respect them and have similar interests.

2. There is always something to do.

When you join Greek life, there is always something to do. With philanthropy events, and just semi-formals/formals alone it is enough to keep anyone busy. With philanthropy events, they sometimes require you to learn dances, maybe learn synchronized swimming dances, learn cheer routines, and sometimes you can even create your own event. While preparing for these events, there is a lot of work that requires the organization to really bond and help put on a great event. Semi-formals and formals are basically like another prom, where everyone dresses up and it is also a time to bring out those new dance moves. It is so much fun and who wouldn't want to go get all dressed up and have a great time with your new brothers or sisters?

3. You become a better version of yourself.

While being part of Greek life is a lot of fun, it is also a lot of responsibility. You should not only carry pride for yourself, but also for your organization. You are also a representation of your community, which really makes you want to be a better person and student, as you want to excel for your organization. As many Greek organizations have study hours and opportunities within their community to better yourself, it is no wonder why many people in Greek life are more ready for the real world.

4. You have a home away from home.

The reason I want to go Greek is because I want a second family, forever. I want to have people I can always go to in times of trouble - or just someone to hang out with - not even in my college years, but also after I graduate. Being homesick in college is a real thing, no matter how far away your college is from your hometown. Joining a Greek organization really helps you stay busy so you won't feel so homesick, because you have a new home along with a new family that is now with you for the rest of your life!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
