Welp, I'm now a junior in college, and I'm getting closer to achieving my dream of being a special education teacher. I don't want to rush my college experience, as I also love Georgia Southern so much, but there are days where I just can't help it. I sat here and thought of article ideas, and just thought I'd share my excitement through a list. It's a little one sided, but hopefully, someone ill like it.
1. I get to wear my teacher clothes. I'll get to teach and strut around the school while looking professional.
2. I'll get to use the teacher breakroom.
I know I'm probably the only one who finds this exciting, but seriously, there is a microwave, coffee maker and probably a copier. I got to see this room many times for my student teaching, and I even got to nuke my microwavable mashed potatoes in that microwave. Mashed potatoes never looked so professional.
3. I'll get to use the staff bathroom.
There is nothing as terrible as a yucky school bathroom inhabited by children. Luckily, as a teacher you HAVE to use the staff bathroom.
4. I get to re-experience special days and treats.
If it's my students birthday and their parents bring cupcakes, I (hopefully) get to get in on the action. If it's Homecoming week, I get to dress up, too! If it is pajama day, I am definitely wearing my pajamas to school. Heck, I have Buddy the Elf Pajama pants and need to show them off.
5. I get to shape minds, young and old.
Whether the students are five or twenty-one, they will be able to learn from me as I will be able to learn from them. I hope to teach my students how powerful they truly are. I also hope my future parents and co-workers take something meaningful from me as well.
6. My mind will be shaped immensely.
It will be shaped by students, parents and colleagues. I will strive to make school the most enjoyable it ever can be for these amazing students.
Disclaimer: Before anyone rains on my parade and tells me that teaching isn't easy, I am aware. I know there will be parents that I will have that may or may not have the favorite phrase of "I'd like to speak to the manager," difficult students and colleagues that aren't necessarily my favorite. Hardships come with any job, but I want to look at the positive side even if it's just the little things. The little things are some of the best things in life, after all.
