Growing up in a small, insular town, I wanted nothing more than to travel and see the world. However, I was always told that traveling required so much money and time that to see the world was next to impossible.
Well as a sometimes-traveler, I can now definitely say that that isn't true. You will have to give up some things (like that daily Starbucks run), and sometimes it will be frustrating. But no matter what sacrifices you have to make, here are reasons that traveling will always be worth the cost.
1. The people are always the best part.
I know, I know, it's corny. But it really is true: no matter where I've gone in the world, the people have always been the most beautiful, amazing part. Whether it's accepting a random dinner invitation in Kenya, or laughing through a conversation in a foreign language, meeting people will always be worth the plane ride.
2. The views.
Wherever you are, take the time to sit down and take in your surroundings. It can be easy to get caught up in the hustle of making it to the next museum and seeing all the touristy sites, but it's the in-between spots that are the true destination. Find that little side cafe in Paris, or the mountain view in Guatemala. Take a picture or two, but then just sit and take in the view without the barrier of a Snapchat filter.
3. Your opinions will change.
To be completely honest, I was skeptical about traveling to Guatemala. I don't speak Spanish, it was a last-minute trip, and I was traveling with a group of people that I didn't know very well. However, at the end of the two weeks, my connection to the people and the country gave me a whole new outlook on Central America and the world in general. Don't be afraid to travel somewhere out of your comfort zone: it'll be your comfort zone soon enough.
4. It will make you appreciate home even more.
There's nothing quite like coming home to your own bed, your own bathroom, and of course, your family. After two eight-hour flights and a five-hour drive last summer, there was absolutely no sight more beautiful than my own bed. A nice hot shower and a few days of doggie cuddles later, and I'm ready to go off on the next adventure.
