Reasons I Attend An Out-Of-State University

I am thankful for this choice everyday.

Reasons I Attend An Out-Of-State University

The process of finding, applying, being accepted and finally deciding on a college is one that I would not wish upon anyone. Hours of online searches, tears and staring at acceptance/rejection letters trying to make a decision that you do not feel qualified to make can drive a person insane. But fear not! Everything does end up working out, and college is some of the most fun you will ever have.

I would like to begin this by first thanking my amazing parents for giving me the opportunity to pick an out of state school and for all the plane tickets and shipping costs in the foreseeable future. While attending an out of state school is not for everyone, the opportunity is one I would recommend you take, if possible.

I love my family with all of my heart, but sometimes you have to learn to grow on your own.

My family is quite possibly the best family there has ever been, and I cannot express how much I love them. This, however, does not mean that attending an in-state school was the right option for me. College is a time to be independent and grow on your own, forcing yourself to be a plane flight or long drive from your family makes it easier to get over the homesickness, because you have no other choice.

A change of scenery is better then you can imagine.

Growing up in the Evergreen State is one of the things I am most thankful for, and when it came time to leave I had a very hard time parting with my beautiful city. Arriving in a brand new, unknown place challenged me to seek out new hangout spots and adventure venues. I have learned to love this beautiful new city and now know how to get from the 90 to the 405 to the 10 without blinking an eye.

New state, new people.

Don't get me wrong, I loved high school and every friend I gained over the years, but there is nothing like a fresh start. When I arrived in my new state, at a new school, I knew no one — not one person from my high school was attending the same university. While it may sound scary that I had no familiar face walking into classes my first day, it was amazing. There is something quite special about being in a room full of people that know nothing about you, it offers the chance for a brand new you.

Comfort zone status: shattered.

I am a big believer in letting life pick you up and throw you a million miles away from where you are comfortable. It's how you grow. It's how you learn to adapt. And it's how you are shaped into the adult you are meant to be.

Attending a university out of state may not be for everyone, but it sure is worth it if you have the chance.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
