5 Spirit-filled Reasons To Attend LHU's Homecoming Weekend

Lock Haven University's homecoming is right around the corner and if you're trying to reserve somewhere to stay now, good luck. Homecoming is one of the college's busiest times of the year; alumni from all different classes are coming to visit the school they proudly graduated from. But what's the big deal? Why trek that far for basically nothing? It's simple, it's a case of being school-sick. Here are five things to do and consider during homecoming weekend for the school-sick audience!

1. Support your Eagles, show your crimson and beige

First and foremost, attend the homecoming football game. Lock Haven may not have the best of football teams but they do play with passion and heart. Football is a tough game; you've only got one game to show the other team what you're made of and if you're not at the top of your game you may end up losing. It's okay as long as you can go home knowing you did the best you could that night.

As far as homecoming goes, it's not really about whether the team wins or loses that says whether you should go or not, it's the experience and showing your crimson and beige! That's the point of attending the homecoming game. The homecoming game is the best way to show your school spirit and dress in your school colors; that's true of any college really. Football is fun and it unites the community like most sporting events do. It's also an escape from life for a bit because during game time you just need know who has the ball and what the score is; your only concern is how your team is playing.

2. Visit campus and seeing the changes

College campuses will forever be renovated and changed, things will be added and things will be removed. This is especially true for an older campus like Lock Haven. The higher ups in charge of the campus' longevity want to keep drawing new students in and the best way to do that is to keep the campus modernized. That doesn't mean everything will be completely different five years from now, just a small portion. The buildings are a really good example of this. Buildings become obsolete or they get too old and encounter problems (Rest In Peace, Russell Hall) and so they need to be torn down or remodeled but no matter the changes, it's still the school that gave you a degree and so it's nice to see the changes.

3. Visit professors

Ah yes, the educators who taught you what you know. Some of them are around during homecoming weekend so it's the perfect opportunity to visit them and see how they're doing. Personally I always enjoyed talking with my professors so I always liked to hang back after class and really get to know them. It was nice walking into the classrooms and my professors knowing who I was. If I were going to visit during homecoming I'd definitely want to see how they were doing, especially since most professors love hearing how their students are doing and what they're up to.

4. Attend campus events

There are always events going on around campus. Lock Haven is small but that doesn't change the fact that HAC (Haven Activities Council) still tries to plan what they can for everyone. Sure, it seem like nothing is really going on sometimes, but if you look around enough, there is. When alumni return to visit the campus, I'd bet my life that there's still stuff going on, in fact, they might have scheduled things specifically with alumni in mind. Nothing like enjoying a campus event or even a performance to help with your school-sickness!

5. Clubs and extracurriculars you may have been involved in

Lastly, when in college, generally people have joined different clubs, whether it was for a major or for personal interest. Something that sounds fun to me is visiting club advisors and asking about what the club is doing currently. It's always fun to see what improvements have been made, what things the club might be involved in currently and if you implemented anything during your time there, seeing how it turned out! If I were to visit, I'd definitely meet with the advisor of the university paper and radio club to ask about them because I'm curious.

There is a ton of fun and lots of nostalgia waiting during homecoming weekend, why wouldn't you want to attend?

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
