It’s February which, as we all know, is Black History Month. It’s a completely ludicrous idea, honestly. I mean, Black history is basically American history, which means that it shouldn’t be separated by race, right? That’s racist. Black history also doesn’t deserve any more special treatment than American history already gets.
The United States definitely doesn’t need a Black History Month seeing as the history of African Americans is taught equally with other narratives of history in public school in this country. Learning more about African American history in America besides slavery and the civil rights era is more than likely not important, especially with all the civil rights issues going on in the country currently. We also most definitely do not need to learn about the death of Emmett Till and how that could possibly relate to the police activity now. There’s nothing more to learn.
I mean, Black History Month is just one month out of the year where black people get to act a fool and scold white people for scolding them, right? It most definitely isn’t a time for learning things that black people have accomplished in life. Definitely not. And it most certainly was not started by Harvard graduate Carter G. Woodson, who was also the son of a slave. No, no. Black History Month is a time for privilege and complaining, not learning.
Also, Black History Month is unfair to other minority groups in the United States. They’re obviously the only ones who get a month dedicated to them. For example, Asian Americans don’t get a month (May). Neither do Hispanics (September 15 - October 15) or Native Americans (November) or even the LGBTQ community (June). Why should African Americans get their own month if no one else does? And if minorities do happen to get a month to celebrate who they are, why don’t white people get a month to themselves? Even though they’re generally the basis for curriculum in United States classes, they clearly deserve a month all to themselves as well.
Black History Month definitely should not be a thing. Everyone should be colorblind so we don’t see color! That way we can all be the same and boring instead of vibrant and different. And then no one gets any special treatment (or gets excluded from anything). After all, we definitely don’t have anything to learn from different races, lest of all history. Black History Month most definitely does not need to still exist because everyone already knows all of the history. We learned all of it in history class.
Or perhaps, I'm wrong. Perhaps history isn't taught equally in this country at all. If it were, would we treat everyone fairly? Would racial injustice and racism still be the systemic pillars of injustice they are today?
