2016 is drawing to a close, and as we bid this eventful year goodbye, ideas for next year’s resolutions begin to emerge. How many times have you made a resolution and actually stuck to it beyond January? Oftentimes our resolutions are overwhelmingly large, cliché, or time consuming. It’s so easy to make a promise to ourselves that we forget or don’t commit to. Here are three realistic resolutions compared to typical goals to make for the next year.
Be more confident vs. Lose weight
Instead of the classic “get into shape” resolution, aim to love yourself the way you are. Give yourself a compliment each day. Better yet, write down a compliment each day and review past ones as you add to it. When you feel tempted to critique yourself, remember the good things about yourself and walk through 2017 with your head held high.
Prioritize vs. Stop spending money
While unnecessary purchases can do damage to your bank account, it always feels good to treat yourself. Instead of never spending money on fun items, prioritize the things you want most. Save a few dollars from your paychecks towards the cost, and when you can buy it, do it! Your bank account will thank you and you’ll feel happier having the item you’ve been eyeing.
Be conscious of your food vs. Go on a diet
Since “diet” is practically synonymous with “torture”, such resolutions hardly last. Instead of cutting out carbs and swearing off sugars, being aware of what you eat can be much more effective. You don’t have to give up the junk food you love to be healthy, but know how much you’re consuming and don’t go overboard. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into each meal. In the same sense, expand your horizons and eat new foods. When you get a little creative, eating right won’t feel like a chore.
2017 has so much potential. If you want to make a change, these simpler resolutions can be a way to improve without suffering or wanting to quit. With a little effort, this could be your best year yet.
