November is already here, and mid-terms are long gone. For the average college student, this is when the pressure to find a good internship settles in. Professors constantly explain to us the importance of interning and gaining as much professional experience as possible before graduation, but obtaining a substantial internship is much easier said than done. There are so many thoughts that go through a college student's head when thinking about applying for internships, like "I am going no where in life," etc. (the list goes on). Here is an accurate description of what college students are thinking when they begin the internship application process:
1. "Where do I even start?"
2. "I wonder how (inserts friend's name) got her internship...I should text her."
3.*searches for internships in local area on google* *gets overwhelmed*
4. "I bet my dad could help me find an internship." *realizes that dad works in finance which has nothing to do with your major*
5. "This is hopeless. I am going nowhere in life."
6. "My resume doesn't have enough 'experience,' but how am I ever going to gain 'experience' if no one ever hires me?"
7. "I wonder if my LinkedIn profile picture is professional enough."
8. "Do paid internships actually exist in real life?"
9. "Wow, I just spent an hour applying for this internship, and it's in Atlanta for full-time. OK..."
10. "OMG *insert company's name* responded! ...Oh wait, that was just an automatic email saying they will contact me if they think I will be a good candidate."
11. "How the h*ll do I show my 'personality' on a one-page resume?"
12. "Internships take the whole, 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' to another level."
13. "How do people expect me to have time to apply for these all day when I have school?"
14. "OK, I officially give up."
15.*checks email one more time* *falls asleep*
*repeats the same cycle the next day*
This post is dedicated to all college students everywhere currently struggling with the internship process—you are not alone! Hopefully one day, we will all land that perfect internship and grow up to be super successful.
Good luck in your search!
