Readjusting to college life may seem easy, but it can be a challenge for some. Instead of having home-cooked meals and staying indoors all day, us college students will have to put on our winter coats in the morning, and walk (maybe drive) to our classes and buildings where they serve food. But despite the horror of waking up early and getting back to the swing of things, routine is actually a great thing for young adults.
This winter break when I wasn't at work I usually spent my days indoors reading, watching Netflix and sometimes chasing my cat around the house because she doesn't love me that much anymore. But anyways, when I go back to school in the upcoming days, I will kind of be on my own again: independent. Now, I have the chance to cook my own meals and do my own laundry. I have responsibilities now. All this can be a bit rough to transition into. So here are some things that you should try the second you drive back to campus.
1. Once you get your belongings into the dorm, relax.
My university is about two and a half hours away, so it's a decently long car ride. Once I carry my bags and suitcases upstairs into my dorm, I am physically drained and simply tired. Once my bags are in the dorm, it's great to simply be lazy for a bit and chill out. Grab some quick snack, find friends on campus, or even just go for a walk, weather permitting. Relaxing in the dorms and campus is a good way to simply readjust to the atmosphere of the college itself.
2. Reorganize your dorm.
Or, reorganize the room to how it was in the Fall semester. When you pack for winter break, you take a lot of things with you. Your dorm may seem hollow. Looking back last semester, my dorm was cluttered a bit with papers and projects. I didn't have any desk space last year. So when I return to my dorm, I'm going to reorganize just a bit. By reorganizing your dorm, it becomes more personal, more homely.
3. Write down your schedule before classes begin.
New semester means new schedule. Personally, it takes a good week or two to fully memorize my schedule. That being said, I like to use my phone or agenda to record what time my classes are. Look it over before the semester begins; that way, you're not so hectic and frantic.
4. Reunite with friends.
It's well known that when you see your friends after being deprived from them for several weeks, things will get loud and joyous. It's great to be with friends when you get back on campus. Better to reunite with them early than randomly encountering them on your way to class. Meeting up with your friends also reminds us why we love our colleges in the first place.
5. Dive into it!
New semesters offer new opportunities, new learning experiences and lessons along the way. With each semester you are faced with challenges that only make you stronger and more intelligent as a person. When it comes to the new college semester, I simply believe diving into it with optimism and determination is the way to go. Be confident, know you can do it, and eventually everything else will fall into place.
