So by now, most everyone knows of the pit bull ban in Montreal. But it was a recent and "on the spot" decision. A pit bull or any dog that resembles a pit bull have been a target considering the fatal attack on a woman in Montreal. With that attack, the family of the deceased woman has been pressuring Montreal's government since the attack happened this past June. However, in previous years, specifically in 2005, the nearby province of Ontario banned pit bulls with Quebec also considering similar legislation.
The law received LOTS of negative coverage all across the world and I especially noticed it on my Facebook. Many of my friends, family and extended Facebook friends own the "pit" type dog and used the platform as a way to rant their anger over Montreal's decision.
It is truly sad that one dog's actions are taking the lives of many. In addition, are we sure this woman didn't provoke the dog in any way? Nevertheless, millions of furry lives are going to be euthanized and as a dog-lover, it saddens me! I have rescued dogs and bought dogs and from both ends of the spectrum, it all lies in the owner. A puppy is a baby, you have to raise it to have manners just like you do children...
As for the "pitties" with loving families they now must be muzzled when going on walks and walked with short leashes. Which to a dog that has never experienced this type of walk, it could be very provoking to cause a new attitude with the dog and or hurt them emotionally; making them think they have done wrong. The truth of it all is: I'm glad I don't live in Montreal.
With that being said here is a photo collection for the "pit" type dogs that I got to see on my Facebook and their loving families.
Sammi Schane
"My niece and nephew, <3 two of the sweetest dogs I've ever met, they both back down to my much smaller corgi mix. The only thing I ever worry about when I go over to my sisters is being knocked down and covered in kisses because they're so excited to see me. I couldn't imagine someone telling my sister that she couldn't have her dogs simply because of the breed that they are. If people actually sat down in a room with bully breeds instead of being afraid because of a "big box head" their minds would change pretty fast. It's all in how a dog is raised."
Tricia Davis Smith
"Someone is a great photo bomber!"
Courtney Fuhrman
"Toby is honestly the sweetest dog! He helps out at the local florist shop in my town, and everyone loves him! I mean, who doesn't love to be greeted by good old puppy kisses?! Toby also has a facebook if anyone wants to check him out."
Kandi Fitzgerald
"Cooper is a sweet overgrown baby. Squeals with joy when he sees people."
Kimberly Parkinson
" Happy pooch just chill-laxin!"
Maggie Ziniecki
"Although he's not a pit bull (American bully) he's often classified as such. He's been the best dog! CGC, therapy and service dog certified he has a huge heart! Not to mention an awesome horse show dog!"
Jessica Bishop
"I love Marshall. He is just the biggest baby. So loving a just a cuddle bug. Great with boyfriends six- year-old."
Haley Willow
"My puppy Layla. She's a little brat but really just wants nothing more than to love you and make you happy."
Morgan Barnes
"Blake, a loving caring champion 4-H dog!"
Amber Granger
"Our dog hoss takes his title of "nanny dog" to a whole new level!"
Kaytlyn Graham
"Last three on the right are all rescue pit bulls, last two are purebred rescue pits, all live together and are amazing with kids!"
Randi Webber
"The decision in Montreal makes me sick! Those animals do not deserve the fate they have been handed because people are uneducated about them!"
Jackie Weller
"Would never trade my little pit mix for the world they are the best dogs ... All dog breeds can have some aggressive individuals, but that does not mean all that they should be outlawed or killed!!!"
Antonice Thomas
"These are the most kind, compassionate and intuitive animals I have had the pleasure of owning. They let you know they love you when you're sad, run around like crazies when you want to have fun and are extremely patient when weird things are thrown their way. I couldn't ask for a better companion! #loving We've had "pits" for my son's entire life of 14 years and they've never done anything to betray us or our visitors; the decision is wrong! As much as it's politically correct not to say groups of people are bad because of what some of them do, the same should be said for dogs!"
Rory Packard
"My pitty is the sweetest girl out there. Haven't had a problem with her once with aggression or anything. From day one (we got her from my sister to help my sister out when she was 2) she got along great with our 10-year-old brown lab/American bulldog. They play together all the time and get along great. She's also awesome with my two nephews who are about to be 5 and 3. Wouldn't trade her for the world!"
Danielle Dobe
"Best dogs to welcome you at the door and cuddle with!"
Anna Santos
"Beauregard, One month in and can't believe what a smart, lovey goofball he is... No regrets!"
Haley Willow
"My childhood dog, Raven. Had her from age 8-21. She was the warmest, most gentle soul anyone has ever met. I couldn't imagine myself growing into the person I am today without her."
Hannah Michelle
"Porter, happy as can be!"
Emma Barnes
"Lilly, a rescue that was to be euthanized, but was then loved by the Barnes family!"
And so as most stories go, the dog has a happy home and a loving family. Many of these dogs live with small children and have almost become the glue to the family. First, this was the Dobermans, then it was the German Shepards that were dangerous, and now society picks on the pit bull. Hug your puppies near and dear tonight, because somewhere in Montreal there is a dog taking their last breath...
