What time is it? Summer time!

After a very long semester, summer is finally here! No more classes, no more waking up super early...well for some of you. The truth is, summer as a college student is way different than summer as a high school students. The reactions for simple things can be as different as night and day. In high school everything feels so exciting. And it should! High school students have their whole lives ahead of them! College students still have their whole lives ahead of them too, but one year can make such a difference in the reactions of high school students and college students.

1. The reaction to end of the semester:

How high school students feel...

verses college students...

High school students get so excited for the end of the school year, and so do college students. But when high school students walk outside the school's doors they don't have to think about school for three whole months. A lot of college students continue taking classes through the summer. Good luck high school kiddos.

2. The reaction to summer jobs:

High school students...

verses college students...

In high school, working 20 hours a week seems like way too much. When will they have time to spend time with friends? College students on the other hand don't always have the luxury to work 20 hours a week. There are bills, loans, and tons of tuition to pay off. So maybe I can pay off my loans by the time I'm 50 years old...right?

3. The reaction to friendships:

High school students...

verses college students...

When it's summer time and you're in high school, you have so many friends that you can call up at any time. It's easy to hang out and do fun things in groups. But the older you get, the more picky you get with the friends you make. Going home over the summer is great when you have those two or three really close friends by your side. And if you don't have any friends back home, Netflix will always be there.

4. The reaction to sleep:

High school students...

verses college students...

When I was in high school, the summers were all about staying up all night. Boy did that change in a year. Now all I want to do this summer is sleep off the never ending finals hangover.

A gap as small as a year between college and high school can make all the difference. It's crazy how one day you're just a kid staying up all night, and the next you're an adult wanting to sleep like there is no tomorrow. But summer is still summer, and I'm excited to see what it holds...especially sleeping in. So what are you doing this summer?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
