13 Thank-Yous For The Random Roommate That Saved My College Existence As I Know It
Kylee Pearl

Random roommates can be scary things. I would know. My first one was arrested finals week and used to bring home random boys to sleep in our room. But that’s another story …

So you’re probably wondering why I would put myself through that again. I had decided to switch schools and that meant another random roommate and possibly another convict who would somehow make me an accomplice to whatever illegal activity she was doing.

However, I quickly realized I was wrong. This one was different. She didn’t seem to have a criminal record. She even seemed… nice.

Two years later, I don’t know where I would be without my Godsend of a roommate.

Here’s a list of things I never actually thanked my (second) roommate for:

1. For actually talking to me.

The only conversations I had with my last roommate were saying sorry if we ran into each other while trying to avoid eye contact. It was a vast improvement.

2. For letting me be apart of her family.

I love her family. Coming to her house over a long weekend was like coming to a second home.

3. For putting up with my messiness.

I liked to think we were both messy. But looking back, it might have just been me.

4. For inviting me to go out.

Even though I never wanted to. Sorry I complained the whole time.

5. For giving me food.

I ate all her trail mix and peanut butter granola bars.

6. And new friends.

I would have never made any of the friends I have today or even survived Junior year without the people I met through my roommate.

7. For being there for me.

Cliché, I know, but true.

8. Going on adventures with me.

Like to the beach during finals week even though we both had studying to do. We're rebels.

9. For putting up with my weirdness.

Like dancing awkwardly or yelling at my computer screen because I live vicariously through TV shows weirdness.

10. And spending every. single. day. with me.

Honestly, I don’t even like myself most of the time, so for her to put up with me when I didn’t even want to was a feat in and of itself.

11. For being one of the most serious relationships in my life.

She’s practically my sig. oth. We’re basically in a long-term relationship.

12. For making me do things I didn’t want to do.

And trust me, there was a lot of things I didn't want to do.

13. For being my day-one college sidekick.

Let's be real, I'm her sidekick.

I knew absolutely no one at school. Or even within a 1000 mile radius. But my roommate quickly turned into one of my best friends. Someone who accepted my weirdness, introduced me to new people, allowed me to be apart of her family (since mine was so far away), and let me be apart of her life.

I could never have asked for a better person to live with. I thank God every day I had the opportunity to share a small part of my life with her. I suppose it was time to thank her as well.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
